The SQL Programmer I is a database professional who enjoys solving unique and challenging problems in creative ways. This person thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative, team-oriented environment and has an enthusiasm for learning. This position develops and manages high quality databases for a variety of applications and systems in both cloud-based and traditional datacenter environments. Responsibilities include administration, monitoring, performance tuning, optimization, backup and recovery as well as analysis, design, development, testing and review of new and existing database solutions. This position will work in an Agile environment and participate in team activities supporting our iterative development process.



Responsibilities

Database Engineering

    Analyze, plan, and implement database patches, monitoring, and backup and recovery procedures in both cloud-based and traditional datacenter environments.
  • Analyze and build database solutions in both cloud-based and traditional datacenter environments that are functional, dependable, and stable.
  • Create estimates of work effort, identify dependencies and evaluate potential risks and mitigations.
  • Build database solutions that satisfy identified requirements.
  • Adhere to current engineering best practices and procedures.
  • Leverage leading secure database design and implementation practices
  • Execute tests and update databases in accordance with requests
  • Integrate vendor systems into our own solutions
  • Document and prepare database changes for peer review with appropriate details and testing instructions according to guidelines and procedures
  • Participate in peer reviews according to our technical guidelines and procedures
  • Implement database changes to development and production environments per guidelines and procedures Operational Excellence
  • Take ownership, ensuring tasks are completed in a timely manner and meet quality standards
  • Appropriately prioritize efforts between administration and development work and production issues
  • Advance systems reliability, scalability and maintainability to ensure long term success of our solutions
  • Develop appropriate tests and change plans to ensure correctness and ongoing quality in alignment with best practices
  • Provide maintenance, diagnosis, triage and troubleshooting of production issues, both proactively and in response to support requests
  • Participate in off hours database and software installations and releases and scheduled maintenance

Team and Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Information Technology team members to deliver database solutions, field support requests, make database administration updates and manage change schedules
  • Partner with software engineers, infrastructure engineers, information security engineers, and business units to provide database solutions to solve complex problems and achieve business goals
  • Communicate with technology teams, other business units and vendors in a timely and courteous manner
  • Appropriately size database administration and engineering efforts to meet organizational goals
  • Communicate to team and affected business units for planned and unplanned disruptions Provide support for vendor system communication and upgrades
  • Document database solutions and processes to aid team understanding
  • Communicate database administration and development project status, estimates and risks to Information Technology Leadership
  • Actively participate in and contribute to iterative development processes

  • Gain knowledge of database engineering trends


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or related field required.
  • 2-3 years of experience in database development and/or database administration.

Skills

  • Fluency in database management and administration (installation, modeling, design, security, performance, backup and recovery, patching, monitoring, and capacity planning).
  • Fluency in SQL and Stored Procedures.
  • Fluency in one or more scripting languages.
  • Familiarity with version control systems.
  • Familiarity with software development tools and technologies.
  • Familiarity with one or more major object-oriented programming languages.
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
