Description A Brief Overview

This position is an entry level position for training in the performance of all routine and specialized EEG testing. Trainee will obtain knowledge and principles to be a competent Electroencephalography (EEG) technologist. Trainee will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze data during recordings, and ensure information obtained is valid and interpretable. Trainee will become familiar with various equipment and departmental guidelines. Trainee will learn to assess patient's status and identify each patient's requirements relative to their age specific needs. Trainee will demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior, develop proper communication skills within the healthcare environment, and promote professional growth within the field. Trainee will participate in all didactic and clinical aspects of the EEG training program.

What You Will Do

  • Performing related trainee duties as directed by Lead EEG Technologist, Supervisor, and/or Manager.
  • Participates in conferences, technical meetings, and other educational activities.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Follows all established departmental policies and procedures. Maintains patient safety and patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Complies with established safety procedures, and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to EEG Lead Technologist, Supervisor, and/or Manager.
  • Helps keep laboratory in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Take and keep record of good notes.
  • Be prepared for tests.
  • Turn in homework in timely manner.
  • Take initiative.
  • Become familiar with specific brain wave patterns to identify abnormal or seizure activity in various formats.
  • Obtain patient's cooperation for the best performance of the test, especially while working with children or patients with altered mental status.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Uses interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other customers.
  • Maintains positive relationships with patients, customers, and co-workers.
  • Attends departmental staff and in-service meetings as required.
  • Participates in scheduled record review sessions with reading fellow attending physicians and/or other EEG Technologists.
  • Participates in observation part of the EGG training program.
  • Learns to set up patients within the designated time period (1.5 hours for an in-lab patient, 2.0 hours for a portable or video EEG recording) under supervision of an EEG Technologist until deemed competent.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.
  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
