Responsibilities

Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center offers hope and healing for youth ages 7 to 17 at the time of admission with several psychiatric diagnoses and/or developmental disabilities. Located in Portsmouth, VA, Harbor Point provides intensive, residential treatment to youth in a comfortable setting that is conducive to healing. Our facility specializes in treating children and adolescents with depression, bipolar, ADHD, and other mental health issues. We also have specific treatment programs for those with intellectual disabilities or those with self-injurious behavior. Harbor Point and its programs are fully accredited by The Joint Commission and the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities. We are licensed by The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Virginia Department of Education. We are a TRICARE-approved and certified facility.

Position Summary:

The Nursing Educator is responsible for assisting the DON in evaluating, reviewing, designing and implementing hospital training events with respect to all RN/LPN/RC staff required training. Also provides, on as-needed basis, patient nursing assessments. Participate in Treatment Team meetings as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Regularly facilitates and/or conducts required training classes with all Nursing Services staff.

2. Works closely with the DON and Nursing Managers/Supervisors to review current education and training needs.

3. Recommends improvements to training programs as needed or as identified.

4. Provides on-going nursing education to staff on a variety of topics as directly relates to performance improvement initiatives, JACHO and other State or Federal Regulatory Agency standards/requirements.

5. Provides feedback to the PI Committee, reporting staff education and recommendations for improvements.

6. Works in collaborative manner with the Infection Control Nurse to identify and assist in training as needed.

7. Research current best practices among other institutions/facilities to ensure hospital is providing most recent and best practices with respect to staff education and training.

8. Meets with all new nursing staff and new employees to ensure a complete orientation to nursing services.

9. Maintains knowledge of the TERM document and each element of the document as it relates to the position.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate from an accredited program in nursing. BSN required. Master's Level preferred.

Experience: A minimum of three (3) years direct clinical experience preferred in a psychiatric or mental health setting, with direct experience in staff education, nursing practices, patient assessments, education concepts, practices and procedures.

Licensure: Registered Nurse in state of Virginia.

Additional Requirements: Complete knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, restraint and seclusion, and ability to prepare and present training events as directed for Nursing Services. Completion of training in HWC/Verbal De-Escalation and BLS within 30 days of employment. May be required to work occasional weekends and/or other hours; conduct weekend training as needed.
