About the role/team:

The Fraud Analytics and Strategy team is responsible for Financial Crime detection and prevention. We are a data-driven team focused on optimizing the performance of our fraud detection tools and leveraging advanced analytics and a robust risk mitigation framework to protect our customers and the business from financial crime.

The Transaction Monitoring Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operational execution and managing the short-term strategic goals/objectives. This role manages the strategic and tactical implementation of transactional monitoring defenses to detect and prevent fraud across commercial credit card products. This position owns the management and optimization of detection systems focused on spend behavior, merchant risk, velocity controls, and geolocation monitoring.

The Manager is expected to be mainly focused on day-to-day operational execution and may contribute to developing mid-range goals. The ideal time spent for a Manager is 20% Strategic, 50% Tactical, 30% Transactional.

How you will make an impact:

  • System Ownership and Optimization

    • Manage and enhance transaction monitoring platforms and detection logic for commercial credit card fraud prevention.

    • Design, test, and deploy rules and risk models to detect a broad range of fraud vectors (e.g., counterfeit, BIN attacks, card-present fraud, cross-border abuse).

    • Optimize authorization-level and post-transaction rules to reduce false positives while maximizing fraud capture.

    • Collaborate with Fraud Operations, Engineering, and Vendors to support performance enhancements, system updates, and incident resolution.

  • Strategy and Fraud Policy Development

    • Develop and refine fraud detection policies based on merchant category codes (MCCs), spend patterns, transaction velocity, and geographic risk indicators.

    • Incorporate external threat intelligence, fraud loss trends, and investigative insights into policy decisions.

    • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on fraud cases/events to continuously improve coverage and execute timely mitigation strategies.

    • Develop and manage operational initiatives to deliver tactical results.

  • Data-Driven Analysis and Reporting

    • Partner with analytics teams to evaluate fraud loss performance, rule efficiency, and alert-to-case conversion rates.

    • Analyze portfolio behavior to identify anomalies, emerging threats, and areas for improvement.

    • Drive iterative strategy changes using performance data, business context, and customer impact assessments.

    • Monitor system Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), evaluate performance trends, and recommend necessary improvements.

    • Cross-Functional Collaboration and Leadership

    • Manage a team focused on the short-term strategic goals and objectives of the operational unit.

    • Collaborate with Fraud Ops, Engineering, Product, and Vendors to ensure fraud controls are aligned with technical capabilities and business goals.

    • Lead stakeholder conversations on fraud risk exposure and mitigation tactics.

    • Support system migrations, product expansions, and vendor onboarding efforts from a fraud strategy lens.

Early Success Expectations (First 100 Days):

  • Improve capture rate of transaction-based fraud by 3%.

  • Decrease false positive alerts by 3%.

  • Build strong relationships with Fraud Operations, Analytics, and Product teams.

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of commercial card products and WEX detection architecture.

Experience you will bring:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Data Analytics, Risk Management).

  • Typically 7 - 10 years of industry or product experience.

  • A minimum of 3+ years of management/supervisory experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in fraud strategy or transaction monitoring for credit/debit products is expected.

  • Hands-on experience managing detection rules and systems (e.g., Datavisor, Actimize, Falcon, or similar platforms) is required.

  • Prior experience in payments, fintech, or financial services is highly preferred.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Solid understanding of fraud vectors in the commercial payments space, including merchant risk and card authorization logic.

  • Advanced data analysis skills: Proficient in SQL, Tableau, Python, Snowflake, etc..

  • Proven ability to contribute to building and managing fraud rules and detection policies.

  • Ability to design effective risk controls that balance fraud mitigation and customer experience.

  • Strong communication, project management, and stakeholder collaboration skills.

  • Experience in payment networks (e.g., Mastercard, Visa) and knowledge of fraud reporting frameworks is a plus.

  • Experience with machine learning or AI-powered fraud models is preferred.

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
