The Pharmacy Technician for Controlled Substances is primarily responsible for coordination of controlled substances including reconciliation of transactions, reporting, auditing, and compliance with regulatory requirements. This position may also spend a portion of time performing the job duties of a Pharmacy Technician; under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and following established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical procedures to support hospital pharmacy operations.
In addition to essential functions related to controlled substances, this team member will support the general management of pharmaceutical supplies and non-controlled medication inventory. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ordering pharmaceutical supplies
- Receiving and stocking medication and supply orders
- Restocking medication Omnicells
- Optimizing medication PAR levels in both Omnicell and Pharmacy
- Performing general maintenance of Omnicell systems

Hours per Week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Monday - Friday, 0730 - 1600. No weekends or holidays

Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs reconciliation of all controlled substance transactions.
- Collects, monitors, and reports on controlled substance transactions not audited through software (e.g., controlled substances used in the operating room)
- Performs review of controlled substance activity in automated dispensing cabinets.
- Performs review of discrepancies, overrides and transaction corrections related to controlled substances.
- Conducts controlled substances audits and the resolution of discrepancies.
- Compiles a monthly controlled substance inventory report.
- Research, compiles, and reports any unresolved discrepancies to the Drug Diversion Prevention Officer and the Director of Pharmacy.
- Manages CII safe in pharmacy by applying safe practices for organizing medications inside the CII safe, labeling all bins, and inactivates medications no longer stocked in pharmacy.
- Assesses and adjusts inventory levels of formulary-controlled substances.
- Ensures all controlled substances are bar coded and scanned into inventory system; monitors data, counts and policy compliance of all controlled substance activity.
- Assists with destruction of expired medications and returns to the reverse distributor.
- Assists pharmacy leadership to ensure that controlled substances distribution practices are in accordance with the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, and other regulatory agencies.
- Assists in development, recommendation, and implementation of policies and procedures related to controlled substances distribution.
- Provides hands-on and written controlled substances training to new hires, and other pharmacy personnel.
- Assists multi-disciplinary staff in quality improvement initiatives and participates in departmental and hospital committees.
- Maintains environmental cleanliness in accordance with regulatory and policy requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Experience: Two years of pharm tech experience
- Experience working with Omnicell preferred
- Equivalency: Completion of pharm tech program may substitute for 1 year of the experience requirement
- Certification(s):
* State of Colorado Pharmacy Tech (PHAT) Cert
* Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention Cert (within 12 months of hire)
* Certificate through a nationally recognized certification board or body approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcare Association (NHA).
Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
Hourly Range: $23.54 to $35.31
