Description The Principal Clinical Content Specialist plays a key role in the creation and governance of workflows and evidence-based tools within the Epic electronic health record that enhance patient care quality, safety, and efficiency. In this role, you will collaborate with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders to drive the development and continuous improvement of clinical content aligned with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and best practices. You will ensure that clinical content - such as order sets and care pathways, documentation templates, population health tools, patient screeners and education materials, alerts and other clinical decision support tools - are both meaningful and impactful. In close partnership with clinical informatics and Epic analyst teams, you will help design and optimize the EHR to support clinicians at the point of care and improve the overall patient and family experience.

Qualifications Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree Degree in clinical or technology relevant area (e.g. public health, research, health care administration, bioinformatics, engineering, or related field). (Required)
Master's Degree Degree in clinical or technology relevant area (e.g. public health, research, health care administration, bioinformatics, engineering, or related field). (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
10 years At least 10 years of related work experience, such as project management, information technology, quality assurance, process improvement, education, or communications. (Required)
5 years At least 5 years of health care delivery, health care operations, public health, or health information technology work experience. Experience with Epic EHR advantageous. (Required)

Familiarity with cross-venue clinical workflows and health care operations, including revenue cycle, analytics, and other business processes. Knowledge of quality improvement and process improvement methodologies and health information and health care regulations and laws. Proficiency in user-centered design principles, human factors engineering, usability testing, and software development life cycle.

Required Licenses and Certifications
This position requires that the appropriate Epic certification be successfully obtained and maintained for the assigned area of responsibility within 6 weeks of completing training, if not obtained prior to hire. 180 Days (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Clinical Content Management
  • Oversees enterprise-wide clinical content initiatives, ensuring cross-functional coordination and scalability.
  • Defines content standards, versioning practices, and operational frameworks for content governance.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to clinical content and informatics team members, ensuring effective workload distribution, prioritization of initiatives, and timely completion of deliverables.
  • Collaborates across interdisciplinary teams and enterprise workgroups to drive clinical system optimization, enhance workflows, and support strategic initiatives across the care continuum.
  • Sets strategic vision for Epic clinical content in alignment with institutional goals, regulatory frameworks, and care model redesign.
  • Integrates insights from user behavior, data analytics, safety events, and system performance into strategic planning.
  • Coaches and mentors across the clinical content and informatics teams; builds capacity and knowledge across the enterprise.
System Build and Maintenance
  • Leads the design, build, testing, validation, and maintenance of clinical content within Epic and related systems, ensuring integrity, efficiency, and alignment with clinical best practices and organizational goals.
  • Manages and executes Epic software updates, optimizations, and upgrades, including clinical content assessment, documentation, testing, and go-live coordination.
  • Ensures compliance with change management protocols, documentation standards, and organizational policies, maintaining accuracy, transparency, and regulatory alignment.
  • Independently manages and leads clinical informatics projects, taking ownership of deliverables, driving innovation, and collaborating with leadership to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Champions user experience and change management, partnering with the training team to develop comprehensive support plans, training strategies, and documentation to ensure smooth transitions and system adoption.
  • Develops and maintains deep expertise in Epic functionality, clinical workflows, and integration points, acting as a mentor to junior clinical content specialists and advising senior clinical and informatics leadership on Epic capabilities, risks, and opportunities.
Customer Service Excellence
  • Conducts proactive rounding and relationship-building with clinical teams to gather feedback, identify improvement opportunities, and ensure alignment between system design and frontline needs.
  • Provides advanced support for clinical content and system issues, leading root cause analysis and resolution of complex challenges that impact clinical care and documentation.
  • Monitors team performance and turnaround times for clinical content development, service requests, and issue resolution, ensuring alignment with clinical operations and service level expectations.
  • Serves as a trusted clinical content advisor to service lines, departments, and executive stakeholders, offering strategic insight into system capabilities, clinical content design, and evidence-based best practices.
Organizational Support
  • Oversees regulatory readiness and ensures Epic content supports compliance, quality and safety, and patient family experience.
  • Leads innovation in clinical decision support, care coordination, education and communication tools.
  • Presents and publishes clinical content best practices, clinical informatics experiences, and quality improvement findings.

  • Represents the organization in external Epic communities and collaboratives.
