The
ECU
BSOM flow cytometry core is currently equipped with a 5-laser Cytek Aurora flow cytometer and a 4-laser BD Aria Fusion cell sorter. The
BSOM cell imaging core has a Zeiss CellDiscover live cell imaging system and a Zeiss LSM900 confocal microscope. These cores also provide access to data and imaging analysis applications.
The mission of these facilities is to provide high-quality and cutting-edge flow cytometry and cell imaging to our users, which increases the innovation and translation of their research. This position is ideal for exceptionally driven, independent candidates who are interested in scientific growth in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment.
The
BSOM Research and Graduate Studies Office has oversight of research activities in the Brody School of Medicine and coordinates activities with other divisions of the university as they relate to research and graduate studies in a collaborative fashion. The Cell Imaging and Flow Cytometry Core labs fall under the Brody School of Medicine Office of Research and Graduate Studies. The
BSOM core labs offer key state-of-the-art research infrastructure and analytical expertise to all investigators at East Carolina University on a fee-for-service basis to support their research endeavors. The
BSOM Research and Graduate Studies Office advances and supports programs in research and in pre- and post-doctoral PhD training within the biomedical sciences. The office is committed to maintaining excellence in graduate education and strengthening the essential connection between research and education. |
Job Duties |
ECU's Department of Research and Graduate Studies (
RGS), Brody School of Medicine, seeks a full-time (12-month, Stated Definite Term) Lab Coordinator - Medical Sciences for the flow core lab. The Lab Coordinator will manage the flow cytometry and cell imaging core facilities, performing flow cytometry, cell sorting, and cell imaging, and managing the day-to-day operations of a research laboratory. The Lab Coordinator will be responsible for the following:
Lab Operations: 75%
- Responsible for developing and implementing experimental strategy, quality control processes, and technical validation for core customers.
- May write grants or be an author of scientific papers.
- Analyze data and interpret outcomes of experiments for customers.
- Independently directs user scheduling and daily operations of the BSOM flow cytometry and cell imaging core facilities.
- Ensures that preventative maintenance and daily calibration of core equipment are scheduled and performed.
- Independently troubleshoots and documents technical issues and the corrective actions required.
- Directs stock taking, purchasing of reagents, and consumables.
Training: 10%
- Trains new users on the various core instrumentation and serves as the educational resource for the core labs.
Maintenance: 10%
- Serves as the point of contact for the core labs with vendors regarding service contracts, maintenance, and repairs.
Administrative: 5%
- Tracks resource usage and directs the monthly invoicing process.
- Completes annual service center assessments and prepares user rate determinations for the Finance central offices.
- May provide 1-2 technology seminars each year.

Minimum Education/Experience |
Master's degree or higher in biomedical science, physical science, or a related field. Hands-on experience in flow cytometry, cell sorting, and cell imaging is required. Experience in managing the daily operations of a research laboratory is also required. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
- Experience working with analytical separations (i.e., liquid chromatography) or mass spectrometry is beneficial but not required.
- Supervisory experience desired.
