ENERGY SYSTEMS GROUP is looking for a Wastewater Performance Engineer to join our team. The position is virtual with frequent travel (60% to 75%) including overnight stays.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer is a primary technical project developer for wastewater initiatives within the organization. As a key technical expert, the Wastewater Performance Engineer works closely with Account Executives and corporate leadership to understand customer needs and translate them into accurate, effective, and cost-efficient wastewater treatment solutions.

This role involves evaluating wastewater treatment plant operations, system design, equipment performance, energy consumption, and the management of high-strength organic waste. The Wastewater Performance Engineer is responsible for developing technical strategies, estimating project costs, forecasting operational and energy improvements, and when applicable, creating plans to measure and verify these improvements. The engineer presents findings and recommendations to customers and internal teams, supports project design and delivery, and ensures smooth implementation to achieve exceptional results aligned with project goals and customer expectations.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer is a primary project implementation resource the technical implementation of a project. Wastewater Performance Engineer is responsible for implementing the technical needs and wants of a customer.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer will help identify and evaluate technical issues that include but are not limited to evaluation of water and wastewater treatment plant operation, performance, equipment, energy consumption, and system design; quantification and classification of available high-strength organic waste in each area; evaluation and optimization of anaerobic digester performance; and providing start-up assistance for biological processes associated with wastewater treatment

The Wastewater Performance Engineer has a basic understanding of plant modeling (using modeling software or bespoke analytical tools) and can work with the Process Engineer/Operations to identify process performance and design requirements.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer works with the Project development team to provide preliminary evaluation of biological, chemical, and mechanical processes of water and wastewater treatment plants to determine opportunities. The POS also coordinates the effort in the transitional period between project development, closing and then delivery.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer will assist the Project Manager and/or Process Engineer/Project Engineer to develop and review design requirements, from design contractors, development of construction documents, development of specification documents, reviewing of vendor submittal documents, equipment shop drawings and contractor documents.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer works directly with the delivery team to answer questions, troubleshoot issues, and develop solutions that may arise during the construction. The Wastewater Performance Engineer provides in-person direction during the start-up phases of the project.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer leads the training for plant personnel on new or modified equipment or processes, identifies and reviews process data during delivery and warranty phases of the project, and ensures that project intent and deliverables are maintained through 100% design and delivery of the project.

The Wastewater Performance Engineer works with customers and managers to satisfy customer requests and concerns and assists the construction team to ensure smooth installations and achieve exceptional results for the customer.

The essential functions of the position include:



  • Serve as a primary technical resource during project implementation, ensuring alignment with customer needs and project objectives
  • Conduct in-depth site assessments to evaluate wastewater treatment plant operations, identify mechanical and operational inefficiencies, and recommend cost-effective, technically sound solutions
  • Assist with the analysis of utility bills, facility financials, and operational data to inform technical recommendations and project feasibility
  • Perform energy savings and operational savings calculations, life cycle cost analysis, feasibility analysis, and risk assessments
  • Create financial models based on project parameters and customer requirements
  • Evaluate and optimize performance of wastewater systems including biological, chemical, and mechanical processes
  • Analyze and improve anaerobic digester and co-digestion system performance; quantify and classify high-strength organic waste streams
  • Provide start-up and commissioning support for biological and solids-handling processes at new or upgraded facilities
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of plant/facility operations and energy systems; act as a long-term technical consultant to customers
  • Use process modeling tools or custom analytical methods to assess system needs in collaboration with Process Engineers and Operations teams
  • Support the development of technical documents including conceptual designs, construction documents, specification packages, commissioning plans, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Review and approve vendor submittals, shop drawings, and equipment documentation to ensure alignment with project requirements and timely delivery
  • Approve selected equipment prior to procurement to ensure accuracy in project costing and delivery timelines
  • Identify and work with subcontractors and consultants to develop accurate technical descriptions, validate project scope, and maintain high quality standards
  • Coordinate with the Account Executives and Project Managers to develop and present project proposals to customers
  • Serve as a liaison between the sales and operations teams to ensure alignment of technical information and smooth project execution
  • Facilitate effective communication among internal teams, subcontractors, and clients by developing clear written and schematic technical documentation that conveys project scope, solutions, and risks
  • Provide in-person technical support during system commissioning, including training for facility personnel on new or modified equipment and processes
  • Coordinate transition efforts between project development, contract closing, and delivery phases to ensure seamless execution
  • Respond to RFIs from clients and contractors during both the development and construction phases
  • Determine and develop necessary measurement strategies to validate and ensure energy and operational performance guarantees are met
  • Stay current on wastewater industry trends, technologies, and regional regulatory requirements by attending industry events, reviewing publications, and maintaining relationships with innovative vendors and contractors
  • Capable of being self-directed and successfully developing strategies in open-ended or evolving project environments
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support successful project delivery and customer satisfaction


Your background includes:



  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited Engineering/Technology program or equivalent
  • Three (3) to five (5) years' experience in a hands-on role in equipment maintenance, equipment operation, process design, or equipment design
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) license


A bonus to have:



  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years' experience with a water/wastewater process facility or design firm
  • PE license
