Description

The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications as an Adjunct Instructor in Design in the Bachelor of Design program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis all year long. Candidates who meet criteria for needed courses will be contacted during planning for the fall or spring semesters.


The School of Design takes a transdisciplinary approach to design education and its position within a premier research university provides faculty with an unparalleled opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, students and community members. Faculty at the School of Design believe in teaching through making, are passionate about their work, and interact with students at all levels in our program.We are actively engaged in a conversation about the future and the positive role of design and designers.


The adjunct instructor's responsibilities will include:



  • Course planning in advance of course launch
  • Preparing and delivering lectures, activities, demos, presentations, and other formats of learning materials
  • Attending all classes in person
  • Coordinating relevant guest speakers
  • If a Teaching Assistant is provided, meet weekly with Teaching Assistant outside of class time as appropriate
  • Providing feedback and grading to students, including synchronous and asynchronous comments on assignments, homework, and presentations as appropriate
  • Entering grades in the CMU online system


The adjunct instructor's experience should include:



  • A knowledge of the fundamentals of human-centered research and design methods - experience with UX/Product/Communication/Environmental design or related fields as appropriate to the courses that they will be leading
  • The ability to engage successfully with students in a dynamic classroom setting with a large number of students
  • The ability to provide concise and actionable feedback to students
  • Experience working as part of a collegial team


Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree plus teaching and/or professional practice experience in design or a related field.
  • University-level teaching experience preferred.
