The Director of Underwriting for Employer & Individual Local Markets will manage a team of underwriters that support the Financial Protection (FP) Product Suite: Life, Disability, Absence & the Supplemental Health products (CIPP, APP & HIPP). The Financial Protection Director of Underwriting will provide leadership to and are accountable for the performance of their team. Additionally, they will serve as a technical resource on unique topics and share their knowledge with the broader Specialty underwriting teams. They will be responsible for the following in their assigned region for both new business and renewals, giving them responsibility for meeting and/or exceeding the financial and membership goals of the regional book of business for the FP products.

The position provides underwriting leadership to evaluate risk and determine case specific rating to Life, Disability, Leave and Supplemental Health new business and renewals to meet/exceed our IOI goals. It is a high-impact leadership role that requires deep underwriting expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and a solid focus on execution and innovation. The FP Director of Underwriting will also be responsible for setting national underwriting strategy and targets, and for meeting/exceeding their specific region's financial goals.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Decision-Making & Risk Management
    • Balance customer, business, and health plan needs with financial goals, internal capabilities, while maintaining compliance with federal & state regulations
    • Make risk-based decisions aligned with overall business strategy
    • Evaluate case characteristics and financial impact to mitigate risk
    • Balance revenue and profitability goals with membership targets in pricing decisions
  • Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication
    • Collaborate with leaders of internal teams (such as actuarial, finance, product, growth) and external stakeholders (brokers, customers, reinsurance partners etc.)
    • Prepare for and participate in Delegation of Authority (DOA) reviews
    • Provide clear, professional responses to inquiries, appeals, and complaints
    • Represent underwriting leadership in strategic cross-functional initiatives and training
  • Compliance & Policy Oversight
    • Ensure consistent application of underwriting guidelines and compliance with state/federal regulations
    • Investigate and report on market conduct issues, audit requests, and regulatory inquiries
    • Stay current on changes in policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Analytical & Financial Expertise
    • Analyze book of business data to identify opportunities for improvement (pricing, product changes etc.)
    • Forecast financial targets (revenue, claims, loss ratios, profitability, persistency)
    • Use data from various sources to assess key performance indicators like profitability and persistency against budget and forecasts
    • Meet regularly with reinsurance partners to gain market information and assess health of the block. Determine if any modifications need to be made to current pricing strategy to meet desired targets
  • Market Insight & Innovation
    • Monitor and develop proposals to react to market and industry trends to anticipate opportunities and customer needs
    • Develop or refine products, processes, and solutions based on market intelligence and stakeholder feedback
  • Underwriting Leadership & Guidance
    • Provide expert consultation on underwriting practices and methodologies
    • Lead the development and refinement of underwriting tools, guidelines, and systems. Ensure delivery and adoption amongst the underwriting teams
    • Ensure underwriting goals align with broader organizational objectives
    • People Development: Foster employee growth and development by providing coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback, while identifying opportunities for skill-building, career advancement, and continuous learning

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of demonstrated Financial Protection (Life, STD, LTD, Supp Health) underwriting experience
  • 5+ years of people management experience with direct reports
  • Demonstrated experience presenting and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience appropriately delegating and empowering UW team
  • Solid Risk management and block oversight with experience creating actionable insights from block level data and metrics
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Proven solid leadership, communication and presentation skills

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
