What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a dynamic Clerical Union Undergraduate Intern to support managers, staff, Office Administrative Assistants, and visitors at the Weapons Design and Assurance Center. A clerical internship can be a steppingstone towards a potential career as an Office Administrative Assistant after graduation. Students will gain valuable, hands-on experience within a professional setting, honing their administrative skills and familiarizing themselves with the laboratory's operations, culture, and systems.

On any given day duties include but are not limited to:

  • Support office functions including administrative processes.
  • Work closely with experienced Office Administrative Assistants to learn best practices and develop a comprehensive understanding of administrative functions.
  • Work closely with Office Administrative Assistants to:
  • Ensure that tasks are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Engage with staff to provide administrative support, address questions, and assist with organizational duties.
  • Assist in preparation of documents, including general correspondence, reports, slides, charts, etc. in accordance with SNL policies and procedures. Assist in editing and formatting documents for both internal and external recipients.
  • Assist in handling telephone communications and receiving visitors which includes: ascertaining nature of calls or visits; taking messages or scheduling appointments; responding to routine questions or referring individuals to appropriate sources of information; and serving as an information resource to the manager and staff.
  • Assist in placing purchase orders and supply orders.
  • Assist with meeting preparation, including copying and collating. Assist with the upkeep of building records, such as rosters, space documents, phone and data port logs, etc. Assist in receptionist desk coverage. Assist with special event planning. Assist with mail distribution and mailbox upkeep.
  • Utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook in performing daily operations.
Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

As a condition of employment, the selected candidate will be represented by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), which requires monthly membership dues or agency fees.

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Interest in office administration profession
  • Currently enrolled in the CNM Office Administration Program or similar program with a minimum of one year left of the program
  • Strong academic achievement, as evidenced by strong GPA and academic honors and recognition
  • Strong, professional written and verbal communication skills
  • General office skills including accurate filing and use of the MS Office Suite of tools (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail
  • Able to follow complex work processes with accuracy and speed
  • Good multitasking capabilities

  • Ability to problem solve
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Dependable and possess initiative and enthusiasm
  • Proactive approach
  • Ability and willingness to work full time hours (40 per week) during summer or academic term breaks
  • Active DOE L- or Q-level security clearance

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
