The purpose of this position is to provide daily care for the Allen Animal Shelter animals, including feeding, exercising, grooming, and monitoring animal health and behavior. Maintains the cleanliness and safety of kennel facilities, assists Animal Services Officers with animal handling and disposal procedures as required. Performs routine administrative duties related to animal care and interacts with the public when needed. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

Essential Functions

- Provides daily care for kennel animals by feeding, watering, exercising, grooming, and monitoring for illness or behavioral issues.
- Maintains sanitary kennel conditions by cleaning cages, pens, floors, food and water receptacles, and equipment using proper disinfectants and procedures.
- Observes and reports animal health and behavior by identifying signs of aggression, disease, or injury and notifying the supervisor.
- Assists with medical procedures by administering medications and vaccines as directed.
- Assists Animal Services Officers by handling animals, supporting shelter operations, and performing minor maintenance on facilities and equipment.
- Maintains accurate records by documenting animal care, dispositions, medical treatment, and other required information in the department database.
- Provides customer service by assisting the public with adoptions, inquiries, and general information when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supporting shelter operations, events, or special projects.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience
- Less than a High School Diploma or equivalent with no prior work experience.
Special Requirements
- Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.

Knowledge of:
- Proper animal handling and restraint techniques.
- Common animal behavior, breeds, and basic anatomy.
- Common animal diseases and signs of illness or distress.
- Proper cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitation procedures for kennel facilities.
- Applicable state and local laws, regulations, and departmental policies regarding animal care.
- Customer service principles and practices.
Skilled in:
- Providing care to animals, including feeding, exercising, grooming, and administering medication or vaccines as directed.
- Observing and reporting on animal behavior and health conditions.
- Cleaning and maintaining kennels, cages, and related equipment.
- Operating basic computer software for recording animal care and shelter operations.
- Communicating clearly and effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Handling stressful or emergency situations calmly and professionally.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:

- Work is primarily in kennel facilities with exposure to animals, animal hair, dander, waste, and cleaning chemicals.
- Requires frequent lifting, bending, crouching, and standing; must lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to outdoor environments, variable weather, and occasionally hazardous situations involving animals.
