Maintenance and Operations Substitute Pool Kern Community College District Salary: $18.12 Hourly Job Type: Full Time Job Number: FY25-2600139 Location: Porterville, CA Department: Maintenance & Operations Basic Function This is a temporary substitute opportunity for a Classified employee on leave. Custodian - Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform routine day or evening custodial activities at an assigned school campus or other assigned District facility; maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition. Groundsworker - Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas. Department Assistant - Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide routine clerical services to College administrators, faculty and staff; provide staff assistance to departments. Representative Duties Custodian - Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school campus or District facility during a day or evening shift; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets. Clean classrooms, lounges, offices and other facilities as assigned; empty waste receptacles; spot mop and shampoo spills; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; replenish dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and windows. * Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean chalkboards and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners. Dust and polish furniture, fixtures and woodwork; perform minor repairs to furniture as needed. Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set and disengage alarms as appropriate. Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs; respond to emergency custodial requests as needed. Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms, gym and multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings; set-up chairs, tables, bleachers and other furniture and equipment for special events or meetings; clean up furniture equipment and debris following these events. Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, blowers and other equipment. Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods as assigned. Perform minor grounds maintenance duties as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. Groundsworker - Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, lawns, bushes and shrubs; hoe weeds; rake leaves and clear debris from walkways, fields, courts and other facilities; pick up debris following assigned tasks. Mow, edge, trim and water lawns, athletic fields and other turf grounds; maintain golf green area; prepare and fertilize soil. Perform general pest control duties; apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides; maintain records related to work performed. Operate a variety of power-driven equipment and District vehicles including a truck, weed eater, mower, fork lift, edger, blower, power pressure sprayer, rototiller and other equipment used in grounds maintenance work; utilize standard gardening hand tools. Communicate with District employees to coordinate work; assist other maintenance and grounds personnel in the repair and maintenance of sprinkler systems. Maintain grounds maintenance equipment in safe operating condition; perform routine maintenance on equipment as needed. Provide training and work direction to temporary and student workers. Perform routine custodial duties as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. Department Assistant - Provide routine information on classes, instructors and schedules to other offices and the general public; issue, receive, type and process various applications, permits and other forms; prepare mailings; receive and sort mail. Perform a variety of work involved in student assistance, preparation of invoices, inventory, time cards, accounts and bank deposits and administration and scoring exams; coordinate the usage of campus computer hardware and software; respond to questions and provide assistance to students regarding testing practices and procedures or related issues and concerns. Maintain calendars and schedules of activities, meetings, interviews and appointments; coordinate activities with other departments, the public and outside agencies. Organize and maintain filing systems; maintain records related to area of assignment including employee, insurance and affirmative action records, job announcement, application, interview and student work experience files. Serve as a receptionist; answer the telephone and provide information to the general public regarding the College's policies and procedures as required. Maintain a variety of statistical information; type statistical reports as required. Prepare College testing materials; inventory and monitor supply levels; request testing materials as needed. Perform other general clerical work; file, schedule appointments; order, distribute and maintain office supplies. Perform related duties as assigned; duties performed at an extension site may be diverse and varied Minimum Qualifications Custodian - Education & Experience Any combination equivalent to: at least six months related experience. Groundsworker - Education & Experience Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of related experience. Department Assistant - Education & Experience Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of responsible clerical experience. Knowledge & Abilities Custodian - Knowledge of: Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work. Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, blackboards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Requirements of maintaining District buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Proper lifting techniques. Ability to: Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or other District facility. Maintain District buildings and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly and secure condition. Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Operate a variety of custodial equipment, such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber. Maintain tools and equipment in clean working order. Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events. Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair. Perform minor non-technical repairs. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Meet schedules and time lines. Work cooperatively with others. Meet the essential physical function of this job which is the ability to lift at least 75 pounds. Successful completion of a fitness for duty physical including drug screen. Proper methods of applying chemicals used in grounds maintenance. Basic record-keeping techniques. Health and safety regulations. Proper lifting techniques. ABILITY TO: Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging, watering, weeding, fertilizing, raking and cultivating lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas. Operate a variety of power and hand tools used in grounds maintenance. Perform routine maintenance on grounds equipment. Apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects and other pests. Observe health and safety regulations. Understand and follow instructions.
