Position Summary
The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Western Carolina University is inviting applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics with a specialization in Secondary Mathematics Education. The position at the rank of Assistant Professor will begin in August 2026. This is a nine-month, academic year position.

The candidate for this position should expect to:

  • Teach undergraduate methods courses to support the secondary mathematics education program
  • Teach additional service courses offered by the Department
  • Mentor and supervise students during their internship experiences.
  • Work with a team of colleagues to recruit and retain secondary mathematics majors as part of an ongoing National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program.


The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has 28 full-time faculty and supports undergraduate programs in mathematics, mathematics education, and computer science. The mathematics program has concentrations in actuarial science, applied mathematics, data science, mathematics education and traditional mathematics. The typical teaching load averages 9 credit hours per semester. Class enrollments range from 35 in freshman level courses to the teens for upper-level courses. WCU students are actively engaged in undergraduate research, contests, and extracurricular activities. More information about the department is available at www.mathcs.wcu.edu .
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have an earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D) in mathematics education, mathematics, or a closely related field of study. This must include at least 18 semester hours of graduate level mathematics content courses from an appropriately accredited institution by August 1, 2026. Demonstrated dedication to teaching, scholarship, and service is expected.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who have professional experience related to mathematics teaching and learning at the secondary level.
