Position Summary: The incumbent is expected to perform work assignments in support of research activities related to cereal rust biology, population genetics, and host resistance. The main responsibilities include but are not limited to: conduct molecular marker analysis, manage plants in greenhouse and field settings, rust inoculations and plant evaluation, increase and storage of rust isolates, data entry and analysis, and maintaining general laboratory operations.

Job Duties

  • (60%) Provide support to research projects conducted in the lab. Perform experiments and analyze experimental samples. Generate sample/control analysis reports. Responsible for generating, recording, and analyzing data.
  • (10%) Lab maintenance. This entails maintaining tools, cleaning, monitoring supplies and equipment, and minor repairs to equipment or facility infrastructure. This also requires good communication with other members of the lab and facility.
  • (10%) Oversee the use of laboratory equipment, training personnel/volunteers.
  • (10%) Prepare labs by purchasing appropriate equipment and supplies. Organize and set up equipment for research projects.
  • (5%) Keep detailed records of all experiments and procedures in laboratory notebooks, databases, spreadsheets, and web-based applications.
  • (5%) Provide presentations reporting data and scientific findings.

Qualifications

Required

  • BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least six years.
  • Experience working with molecular marker assays on plants.
  • Experience managing plants in greenhouse and field settings.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of, and experiences working with, cereal rust pathogens and their hosts; experience in rust inoculation, inoculum increase and maintenance.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $30.25 - $33.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
