Assistant Teaching Professor in Criminology and Criminal Justice Job Description Summary, Duties and Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Preferred Qualifications The search will remain open until the position has been filled. It is the State's flagship, public R1 research university as well as the land grant and sea grant university for the state of Rhode Island. The main campus is located in the historic village of Kingston. Both campuses are near major beaches in a beautiful coastal community. URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Position Summary The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Rhode Island is recruiting for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor and invites interested candidates to apply for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is a full-time, academic year, non-tenure track appointment, limited to one year with the expectation for yearly renewal, to commence in Fall 2026. Teaching Faculty are included in the Collective Bargaining Agreement that is negotiated by the URI chapter of the American Association of University Professors and later may be eligible for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. Key Responsibilities Qualifications Required: 1. Master's or Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a closely related discipline with a specialty oriented towards criminology or criminal justice or ABD with degree conferred by September 1, 2026. (a J.D. is not sufficient for this position). 2. Excellence in teaching undergraduate criminology, criminal justice, or closely related courses at the college/university level. (TA experience will be considered). 3. Ability to work with diverse groups/populations. 4. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills. Preferred: 1. Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or closely related discipline with a specialty oriented towards criminology or criminal justice or ABD with degree conferred by September 1, 2026. 2. Experience teaching criminology, criminal justice, or closely related courses at the college/university level as the instructor of record. 3. Experience teaching high impact large lecture introductory classes. 4.
