The Office of Sustainability seeks a highly qualified and motivated individual to join our team as a Sustainability Data Analyst to support the design, implementation, and management of sustainability data systems and reporting frameworks that support institutional decision-making, advance climate and sustainability goals, and enhance transparency. The Analyst will work across the department and closely with external units, including University Analytics & Institutional Research (UAIR), University Facilities Services (UFS), Enterprise GIS (eGIS), and others, to centralize sustainability-related metrics, streamline reporting, and develop accessible dashboards that share the institution's progress towards long-term sustainability goals. The Office of Sustainability serves as the responsible unit for all institutional sustainability reporting, including AASHE STARS, the Princeton Review, the Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability, and other external frameworks.

Duties & Responsibilities

Data Collection, Analysis, Benchmarking, & Reporting

  • Routine data collection and reporting for institutional sustainability assessments, including the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, & Rating System (AASHE STARS), the university's Sustainability & Climate Action Plan, the Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability, and other frameworks.
  • Use established procedures to analyze sustainability datasets using techniques such as statistical analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling, etc. to identify patterns.
  • Follow guidance to develop reports and visualizations to support strategy development, planning, and institutional decision-making.

Sustainability Data Infrastructure & Management

  • Assist with the routine development and maintenance of a centralized database for storing, managing, and updating sustainability-related datasets (e.g., water use, emissions, commuting, waste, energy).
  • Conduct basic routine audits and validation under supervision to maintain data accuracy and integrity across internal and vendor platforms (e.g., UAccess, EnergyCAP/CarbonHub, ArcGIS, Power BI, Tableau, etc.).
  • Communicate with relevant university departments to conduct required data analysis and to improve the sharing and accuracy of sustainability related data.
  • Help identify patterns, trends, and gaps within the provided data and suggest improvements for greenhouse gas inventories and carbon tracking across scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
  • Assist with the creation of public-facing dashboards using business intelligence tools and software such as EnergyCAP, Power BI, and/or Tableau to display progress toward key sustainability metrics and commitments.
  • Participate in the development and enhancement of qualitative reporting and tracking methodologies to complement quantitative data for improving transparency, contextual understanding, and user engagement across institutional sustainability communications and decision-making.
  • Perform benchmarking of sustainability performance metrics using provided internal data as needed.

Student Employee Supervision

  • Assist with the day-to-day duties of 1-2 student employees under supervision, for focused on data-related tasks, including tracking project progress, maintaining data quality, compiling student contributions, and providing ongoing training and mentorship to build analytical and technical skills.
  • Support student employee supervision, elevating probation, and referring any probation or termination issues to supervisor.
  • Conduct a bi-weekly review of student employees' work and approve time worked in UAccess.
  • Assist the recruitment, on-boarding, training, and supervision of program student employees. Conduct annual student employee evaluations.
  • Facilitate enhanced student employee retention by providing mentorship, targeted training and on-boarding protocols, and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties assigned in an orderly and efficient manner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic data analysis concepts (data cleaning, transformation, and visualization).
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and how to apply them to business or research problems.
  • Knowledge of basic project management and reporting workflows.
  • Skill in creating clear visualizations to communicate findings.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication for presenting results to non-technical audiences.
  • Skill in time management and prioritization to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with team members.
  • Ability to identify data quality issues and escalate appropriately.
  • Ability to analyze trends and patterns to support decision-making.
  • Ability to document processes and maintain accurate records.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as ArcGIS, Tableau, Excel, and/or Power BI, and relational databases preferred.
  • Experience with sustainability-related platforms such as EnergyCAP/Carbon Hub, SIMAP, and/or AASHE STARS preferred.
  • Familiarity with greenhouse gas accounting, ESG reporting, and higher education sustainability frameworks preferred.
