A Brief Overview
The primary responsibilities of this role include providing on-site support for the reprocessing of flexible endoscopes and related devices and equipment. This position is also responsible for ensuring that all reusable surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment are properly decontaminated, inspected, assembled, packaged, sterilized, stored, inventoried, and appropriately tracked in accordance with the established departmental and or hospital policies and procedures.

What you will do

  • Employees hired under this role will predominately be responsible for the following items (80%):
  • Reprocesses endoscopes according to manufacturer's IFUs along with AAMI, SGNA, AORN, and/or CDC standards/recommendations.
  • Maintains inventories of endoscopic and reprocessing equipment and supplies.
  • Performs safety checks to verify proper equipment functioning.
  • Maintains and verifies compliance with all appropriate documentation requirements.
  • Cleans, disinfects, or calibrates scopes or other endoscopic instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and facility standards and Infection Control guidelines.
  • Maintains endoscopic and reprocessing equipment for optimal functionality and coordinates repairs as needed, according to facility policy and procedure.
  • Able to articulate understanding of policies and procedures of the department. Must also understand the AAMI standards to reference and apply this knowledge as it pertains to scope reprocessing.
  • Employees hired under this role will occasionally be responsible for the following items (20%):
  • Ensures processing and assembly of medical supplies, equipment, and instrumentation in accordance with established productivity measures of at least a cumulative average of 80%. This average will be monitored over no less than an 8-hour period and up to a 40-hour work week.
  • Operates automated washers, cart washers, ultrasonic washers, automated endoscope reprocessors, and sterilizers in a safe and efficient manner following manufacturers' written instructions and department policy and procedures.
  • Appropriately transports any soiled medical instrumentation / devices according to departmental and or hospital protocol and established guidelines.
  • Appropriately sorts soiled items to be decontaminated and cleaned for safe handling by other staff members for items to be reprocessed safely for patient use.
  • Inspects instrumentation and equipment for cleanliness, defects, and proper working conditions prior to packaging 100% of the time.
  • Maintains an accuracy percentage of complete instrument trays processed 100% of the time.
  • Ensures all associated documentation is complete and initialed 100% of the time.
  • Proficient in the use of the SPM Instrument Tracking System for all work assignments.
  • Ensures all items to be High Level Disinfected / Sterilized (HLD/S) are subjected to the correct disinfectant / sterilization modality under the appropriate parameters which are to be validated with the proper documentation.
  • Distribute all HLD/S items in a manner that will maintain their HLD/S integrity and appropriately document when necessary as per departmental and or Hospital protocol.
  • Ensures all patient specific case cart needs are met providing the correct items for the correct times with sets that are complete if possible.
  • Ensures consistent and effective flow of communication.
  • Communicates all concerns regarding the workflow, employee concerns, equipment issues, safety concerns, and any ideas of opportunity for improvements of services.
  • Attends and engages in departmental staff meetings and provided departmental in-services.
  • Ensures compliances and demonstrates knowledge of all mandated safety programs.
  • Ensures appropriate dress codes are followed and enforced 100% of the time.
  • Timely adherence to internal and external emergency plan 100% of the time.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required

Experience Qualifications

  • Experience with scope reprocessing - Required
  • At least two (2) years Experience with scope reprocessing - Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Basic computer literacy needed. (Required proficiency)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of hospital personnel. (Required proficiency)
  • Must be self-motivated and able to perform varied tasks with minimal supervision. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high pressure environment. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) - - Required
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) - - Preferred
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) - - Preferred
