Job Summary

Provides Occupational Health and First Aid Case Management services at designated Duke Energy locations. Services include performing physical exams for regulatory compliance, providing first aid, completing associated scheduling and required recordkeeping, consulting with local management, working with company Workers' compensation coordinator for site injuries requiring off-site evaluation/treatment, and notifying local medical facilities of same. Nuclear OHNs take calls on a rotational basis for field occupational health, medical and regulatory compliance questions during non-working hours.

Responsibilities

Performance of physical examinations for compliance with NRC, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements per directives of Corporate Medical director (CMD).

  • Determines type of mandated physical required.
  • Schedules appropriate physical exams and medical tests.
  • Evaluates employee medical condition and ability to perform specific job functions.
  • Recommends medical clearance when results are within guidelines of CMD directives, and obtain physical concurrence on clearance as required.
  • Make appropriate referrals for those who are not medically cleared, while maintaining medical confidentiality
  • Function independently and provide medical direction within scope to the OHN position.

Medical Documentation

  • Appropriately document all medical examinations, tests, consultations, and evaluations.
  • Maintain confidential employee medical files.
  • Retrieve and provide medical information to employees and corporate legal staff only when appropriately released to do so.
  • Perform audits of medical records and files to ensure compliance with NRC regulations.

Scheduling

  • Schedule all physical exams and medical tests to meet business needs and regulatory due dates.

First Aid and Case Management

  • Assess injuries and illnesses to determine appropriate treatment (first aid, basic life support, treatment or referral).
  • Provide first aid for injuries and illnesses during normal working hours.
  • Document initial assessment/treatment and each subsequent treatment/contact until healed/released.
  • Alert Duke Energy WC Coordinator of employee injuries referred off-site.
  • Alert vendor's management of vendor visit for injury or illness.
  • Notify off-site medical facility of injury coming to them for evaluation/treatment.

Health & Wellness issues and EAP referrals

  • Serve as resource to employees for personal health issues and concerns
  • Refer employees to external health and medical agencies for consultation and information regarding specific medical conditions.
  • Provide medical review on Return-to-Work forms for management.
  • Discuss medical, health and wellness issues as needed, making appropriate medical and EAP referrals when necessary

Major responsibilities and specific job duties (Employee Care specific)

Effectively communicate health education

  • Provide education to employees by writing health related articles for the company and creating PowerPoint presentations.
  • Actively participate in safety meetings throughout areas of support.
  • Performing hands-on ergonomic evaluations for employees.
  • Supporting corporate Quick Fit stretching program.
  • Establish healthy working relationships with employees/site management.

Medical documentation

  • Appropriately document all work related and non-work-related events in nursing log.
  • Maintain organization to ensure case management protocols are followed.
  • Keep confidentiality of employee health records in compliance with State and Federal law, including HIPAA.

First aid and case management

  • Assess all work-related injuries and illnesses to ensure the best treatment is given.
  • Assess, plan, and deliver first-aid care to all employees in a timely fashion, with a focus on the prevention of escalation to OSHA recordable incidents
  • Alert site management and safety of all work-related events and provide update to stakeholders per case management protocols.
  • Provide first aid for injuries and illnesses during normal working hours, and on-call afterhours.

Travel as needed to assess employees

  • Willing to travel overnight to support emergency deployments (storm duty) if needed.
  • Provide medical support for special events, training, etc.
  • Actively participate in safety meetings, trainings, meetings, etc.

Health & Wellness issues and EAP referrals

  • Serve as resource to employees for personal health issues and concerns.
  • Refer employees to external health and medical agencies for consultation and information regarding specific medical conditions.
  • Discuss medical, health and wellness issues as needed, making appropriate medical and EAP referrals when necessary.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in nursing
  • Minimum 2 years work related experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable of HIPPA requirements and handles confidential medical information appropriately.
  • Experienced in use of computers, email, MS Word, and MS Excel programs.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision & outside help.
  • Excellent people skills and high level of attention to detail.
  • Two years of experience in Occupational Health nursing.
  • Knowledgeable of NRC regulations. (Nuclear Specific)
  • Knowledgeable of OSHA requirements with ability to make sound medical decisions in each area.

Working Conditions

  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
  • Basic function is performed in a medical office
  • Emergency work may be performed inside power plants throughout the system
  • Interstate highway travel to remote sites to provide first aid case management
  • Normal physical effort to conduct nurse assessments and medical testing
