Essential Job Duties |
The Research Operations Manager will oversee and supervise the activities necessary to operate one or more research environments, such as laboratories, clinics, field sites, and/or classrooms. This role requires knowledge of research concepts, practices, and procedures; laboratory operations; regulatory requirements; and planning and budgeting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage facility planning and maintenance
- Maintain inventory control and ensure procurement of necessary supplies
- Purchase and maintain laboratory and field equipment
- Oversee fiscal and administrative services
- Monitor environmental risks and ensure quality control
- Plan and schedule work for research activities
- Determine staff assignments and assess training needs
- Supervise and manage human resources functions
Primary Responsibilities Specific to the Horticulture Field Lab:
- Manage, coordinate, and maintain the Horticulture Field Lab site and its associated facilities
- Oversee student training and use areas
- Acquire, coordinate, and allocate resources (staff, facility, equipment, and supplies) among various research, teaching, and extension programs (referred to as user programs)
- Coordinate efforts across multiple projects led by various groups of researchers, teachers, and principal investigators (users)

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
Required: Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Knowledge of agricultural and scientific principles relevant to facility operations
- Strong planning and organizational skills, including scheduling and prioritization
- Facility or lab management experience, including equipment and safety oversight
- Ability to communicate procedures and ensure compliance with safety regulations
- Proficiency with maintenance scheduling and resource tracking

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in a research or university facility setting
- Knowledge of pest and weed control strategies
- Familiarity with state and federal compliance requirements for research facilities

Required License(s) or Certification(s) |
NCDL or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.- Valid NC Pesticide license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
