Job Description

Machine Shop Manageroversees all aspects of a machine shop's daily operations, ensuring efficient production, quality, and safety.They are responsible for managing a team of machining and assembly leaders,and other personnel, coordinating production schedules, and ensuring the shop meets customer demands and quality standards.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proactively exhibits and promotes The McWane Way Principles.
  • 1st Responsibility - Ensuring personal safety and the safety of your team members.
  • Assists supervisors and managers in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Wear appropriate PPE which may include fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing protection, foot, hand, head and eye protection.
  • Uses proper lifting and ergo techniques.
  • Strong team building abilities.

Operations Management:

    • Direct the work of the machine shop, optimizing workflows, and ensuring efficient use of resources.
    • Manage production schedules, prioritize work orders, and track job progress.
    • Oversee inventory management, including tooling, supplies, and spare parts.
    • Coordinate with other departments (e.g., engineering, quality) to ensure seamless operations.
    • Oversee the development and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the shop.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., safety, environmental).

Team Leadership and Development:

    • Lead and motivate the machining, coating and assembly team, providing training, mentoring, and performance feedback.
    • Foster an ownership culture of safety, quality, accountability and valuing others.
    • Manage employee performance, conduct performance evaluations, and address any issues.

Quality Control and Improvement:

    • Maintain a quality control program, ensuring that products meet specifications and customer expectations ISO 9001.
    • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve quality.
    • Work with the quality engineering team to develop and maintain a robust quality program.

Safety:

    • Ensure a safe working environment, enforcing safety rules and regulations.
    • Promote a strong safety culture among employees.
    • Investigate accidents and incidents, implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

Budget and Cost Management:

    • Review and ensure compliance with the department and equipment budget.
    • Develop and recommend cost reduction strategies.

Communication and Collaboration:

    • Maintain clear and consistent communication with upper management, providing updates on key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational challenges.
    • Collaborate with other departments to ensure operational continuity and meet customer needs.
    • Work with customers to understand their needs and ensure that their requirements are met.

Technical Expertise:

    • Possess a strong understanding of machining, assembly processes, CNC, and machine maintenance.
    • Be able to interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
    • Troubleshoot machine malfunctions and resolve production issues.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in technical or engineering area preferred; high school diploma or GED certificate required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of manufacturing or industrial experience required.
  • At least three (5) years in a supervisory or managerial role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises team members in assigned areas. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Language Skills

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Uses mathematics to solve problems.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Design software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
