Research Technician I, Department of Immunobiology

The Department of Immunobiology is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and organized research technician to support a project investigating chronic stroke pathology in human post-mortem brain tissue. The successful candidate will contribute to immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent staining of archived human stroke tissue, with a focus on identifying markers of neuroinflammation, vascular remodeling, and immune cell infiltration. This position offers the opportunity to work as part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary research team. Training will be provided in several advanced histological and imaging techniques, with the expectation that the technician will perform experiments independently once trained.

Under supervision and with detailed instruction:

• Conduct research experiments following detailed protocols.
• Collect samples or data and perform laboratory analysis and/or quantify and tabulate results using laboratory and experimental equipment such as microtomes, microscopes, centrifuges, analytical balances, Magpix multiplex immunoassay instrument, Direct Detect protein quantification instrument, sonicators, and mouse behavior apparatuses.
• Collaborate on the compilation of data and assist in analyses, maintain detailed and organized research data in laboratory notebook, write summary reports, and report findings to the investigator.
• Process tissue samples and prepare slides using staining techniques.
• Assist with mathematical and statistical analyses.
• Package waste material and arrange for disposal according to established procedures.
• Assist in training students working in the laboratory.
• Organize supplies, materials, or equipment and set-up equipment and materials for laboratory experiments.
• Follow established procedures to prepare solutions and reagents; perform library research to find appropriate procedures, as required.
• Perform clerical tasks such as labeling and inventories.
• Clean glassware and other laboratory equipment.
• Make minor repairs and/or make arrangements for major repairs to be performed on aboratory and experimental equipment such as microtomes, microscopes, centrifuges, analytical balances, Magpix multiplex immunoassay instrument, Direct Detect protein quantification instrument, sonicators, mouse behavior apparatuses.

Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities:

• Basic knowledge of neuroscience and immunobiology: An understanding of neuroscience concepts and principles, including the anatomy and physiology of the brain, basic neural circuits, and common research techniques used in neuroscience and immunobiology.
• Laboratory skills: Experience with laboratory techniques and equipment, including sterile technique, tissue preparation, histology, and microscopy.
• Data analysis skills: Experience with the analysis and interpretation of data using statistical software and other tools, as well as the ability to troubleshoot experimental protocols.
• Attention to detail: Excellent attention to detail required.
• Time management skills: The ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, as well as meet project deadlines.
• Communication skills: Ability to effectively communicate with collaborators and other team members, as well as present results at lab meetings and conferences.
• Adaptability: Must be able to work independently or as part of a team, as well as handle unexpected challenges that may arise during experiments.
• Safety awareness: Should have a strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols and procedures, including handling of hazardous materials and biological specimens.
• Ethics: Good understanding of ethical issues surrounding animal research, and must adhere to all institutional and regulatory guidelines.

• High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.

• Bachelor's degree in a biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, genetics, or related field. High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
