The Finance Division at Carnegie Mellon University is responsible for providing financial management, enterprise planning and stewardship in support of education, research, and strategic goals of the university. As part of the Controller's Office Team, the payroll department supports the entire scope of pay operations for CMU, including staff, faculty, and students, across international and domestic multi-state locations.

Reporting to Director of Payroll Services, the Finance Division is seeking a Global Payroll Specialist to operate as a member of a team of experts dedicated to processing payroll and administrating related activities for the University's faculty, staff, and students (i.e., standard and off-cycle payroll runs, W-2 processing, garnishment maintenance, treaty documentation for non-resident aliens, etc.). In this role, you'll spend most of your time (95%) on gross-to-net payroll processing and adjustments, with the balance focused on benefit and retirement adjustments entered via payroll.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Executing gross-to-net payroll functions, oversight of the department's case management queue, evaluation, and administration of treaty documentation for non-resident aliens as well as other duties relevant to progression and success of the department.
  • Follow-up on inquiries, perform research and analysis, ensure proper resolution, or escalate issues to the appropriate individual on the team.
  • Processes payroll and performs related activities for the University's faculty, staff, and students (i.e., standard, and off-cycle payroll runs, W-2 processing, garnishment maintenance, treaty documentation for non-resident aliens, etc.).

What we're looking for:

  • Ability to execute Tier 2 payroll processes in the context of a multi-tier customer inquiry and issue resolution model, including ESC Tier 1 first point of contact for questions and walk-in services, ESC Tier 2 system transactional support, and Tier 3 escalation to process/policy content experts in HR, Finance and Computing Services
  • Ability to demonstrate accountability and a strong commitment to meeting team objectives In-depth knowledge of Payroll transactional processes and related administrative activities, including relevant taxation and compliance considerations.
  • Ability to contribute to an outstanding customer service environment, including application of tact and diplomacy when dealing with customers.
  • Ability to adapt efficiently to changing policy, process, and system requirements in support of a continuous improvement model.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • CPP & FPC Certification preferred.
  • 3-5 years of payroll experience required.
  • Experience coordinating with functional configuration and technical teams to resolve system issues, enhance business processes and support testing activities.
  • Experience processing payroll for a medium to large non-profit and/or higher education organization
  • Experience in processing payroll transactions for non-resident aliens
  • Experience delivering high quality customer services, including facilitating resolutions to complex payroll inquiries.
  • Experience supporting system testing and/or data validation activities.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
