Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Division of Comparative Medicine (
DCM) is responsible for the care of all vertebrate animals on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (
UNC-CH) campus.
DCM is committed to programs of excellence in veterinary care and laboratory animal management practices for all species used in
UNC-CH research endeavors.
A staff of more than 170 professional, technical, and administrative personnel provides quality animal care to a daily population of over 200,000 animals located in 26 animal facilities on and off the
UNC campus. Federal funding and foundations sponsor over $1 billion in research on the
UNC campus conducted by the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Pharmacy, as well as the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology.
A major responsibility of the Division's veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and laboratory technicians is the health care and humane use of all animals. The Division's program is reviewed semi-annually by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and has been accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (
AAALAC) since 1973.
DCM and the University also meet U.S. Department of Agriculture (
USDA) and Public Health Service standards and regulations. As laboratory animal specialists they provide a comprehensive program of veterinary care, offer technical advice and assistance, and provide needed laboratory and research core services for teaching and research purposes. |
Position Summary |
THIS POSTING IS FOR TWO IDENTICAL POSITIONS (POSITION NUMBERS: 20037231 AND 00058159). BY APPLYING TO THIS POSTING, YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR BOTH AVAILABLE POSITIONS.
The Research Support Technician performs a variety of facility, research, and husbandry support duties. This position is responsible for:
1) Daily care of research animals including cage changing, cleaning, and sanitation, animal observation, handling, and restraint.
2) Preparation for incoming animal orders and transfers
3) Assist in completing husbandry training for new and/or transferred staff.
4) Handle/restrain laboratory animals as necessary and follow proper procedures for assessing health of the animal.
5) As directed by Veterinarians/Vet care staff: assessing, evaluating, and implementing a treatment plan for a select subset of animal health conditions as well as administering routine treatments
6) Utilize VetCare system to document and track health cases.
7) Assist with training labs for usage of the EuthanEx Smart Box.
8) Assist with providing routine care such as parasite control.
9) Facility duties include performing animal inventory scans, ensuring functioning of reverse osmosis water systems, and ensuring room signage is up to date.
10) Assist with placing feed and supply orders, facility tours and orientations, ensuring sentinel program accuracy, work order submission for routine issues, and preparation and storage of appropriate facility paperwork.
11) Other duties as assigned
12) Emergency duties required during adverse weather and /or other emergency situations. Holiday and weekend work required on a rotating basis. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
- Demonstrated experience performing animal husbandry in a laboratory animal environment.
- Demonstrated ability to function in a detail-oriented, teamwork environment.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with research/veterinary staff and personnel at all levels of an organization.

ALAT certification within the first year of the role. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
- Higher levels of
AALAS certification. |
