Information Technology and Computing Services ( ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.

Information Technology and Computing Services ( ITCS) at East Carolina University supports enterprise-wide computing and technology services. The primary purpose of this team is to empower faculty, students, and researchers with the technology, tools, and support they need to teach, learn, and conduct research effectively and innovatively.
Job Duties
The Director of IT Teaching, Learning, and Research Technology provides strategic and operational leadership for the development, delivery, and support of academic technology services at ECU. This role is responsible for advancing the effective use of technology in support of the institution's teaching, learning, and research missions. The director will lead teams supporting instructional technologies, digital learning environments, research computing, classroom and AV technologies, and academic innovation initiatives.
This position partners closely with faculty, academic leadership, IT leaders, and campus stakeholders to foster an ecosystem that enables innovation in pedagogy, scholarly research, and student success through technology. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer and has five Assistant Directors as direct reports.

  • Provide vision and leadership for academic technology services, including teaching and learning technologies, research computing, classroom technologies, and educational innovation.
  • Develop and maintain a strategic roadmap for teaching, learning, and research technologies aligned with institutional academic priorities.
  • Serve as a key partner to academic leadership, faculty, libraries, centers for teaching excellence, and research administration.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and development opportunities for Teaching, Learning, and Research IT staff.
  • Manage vendor relationships for hardware, software, and services related to academic technologies.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and procurement related to academic technologies.
  • Provide leadership to develop and prioritize the Education & Technology Fee Budget.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of IT Teaching and Learning Technology to ensure the continuous improvement of Learning Management Systems (LMS), lecture capture, and digital content tools and technologies that support the classroom.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of IT Research Technology and other IT leadership to ensure robust research computing infrastructure and services, high-performance computing (HPC) resource availability, research data storage, and specialized software platforms in support of the university research mission.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of IT Innovation to collaborate closely with faculty, staff, students, and campus partners to identify, pilot, and scale emerging technologies that primarily focus on advancing the institution's mission in teaching, learning, and research.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of IT Classroom Technology to ensure the strategy and operations for classroom and instructional spaces technology is aligned with campus needs and fiscally sustainable.


The standard work schedule for this position will need to be adjusted to meet the position requirements, which include and are not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.
This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements ( FWA) under the ECU FWA Policy.

This position requires the employee to reside within a reasonable commutable distance of the ECU main campus. "Reasonable commuting distance" is defined as a location that does not exceed a distance that can be safely traveled in two hours by automobile under average conditions of traffic, weather, and roads to employee's assigned duty station in Greenville, NC.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is required.

Proven ability to lead change, foster collaboration, and develop high-performing teams. Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills. Demonstrated success managing technology teams and academic partnerships. Experience developing both long term strategic and short term operational plans, goals, and objectives, setting success metrics, and tracking progress. Experience supporting a broad range of technology needs within a college or campus wide. Experience working directly with faculty on technology supports needs and initiatives in support of teaching, research, and innovation.
