About the Position

The Assistant Superintendent for Finance is responsible for planning, directing, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating the overall activities of the Finance Department and providing general oversight of the department's financial activities. In this role, you will manage the budget and financial operations of special revenue fund departments and provide budgetary, financial, and administrative support to the department management team, Maricopa County School Districts, and accommodation school districts, so that they can better plan, organize, and control other operations of the Department.

The office is statutorily responsible to provide services supporting school governing board elections, bond and override elections, appointments, school finance, infrastructure, and maintain homeschool and private school records. The superintendent leverages the office to strengthen teacher voice, increase respect for the education profession, and create resources that expand the capacity of teachers, administrators, and support staff. The Superintendent also oversees the Maricopa County accommodation district.

We Require

  • Five years of administrative experience in finance, including two years of supervisory and/or management experience
  • Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field
  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

Job Contributions

  • Oversees the Department's multi-million-dollar financial operations, consisting of special revenue funds, grant funds, budgeting, and procurement activities to provide fiscally responsible, accountable, necessary public services to residents of Maricopa County
  • Manages billing for services and other accounting activities and maintains the Budget Office automated budget system for the Department. Analyzes and resolves budget-related problems
  • Develops and monitors documents and reports, and maintains written procedures for various accounting and financial activities as needed
  • Works closely with the Chief Deputy Superintendent and Collation of Schools to establish annual action goals, strategies for achieving those goals and criteria for evaluation
  • Recommends legislative initiatives; writing and delivering presentations to the Board, school departments and the community
  • Maintains and reconciles accounts, reviews transactions for accuracy, researches discrepancies and incorrect balances, and coordinates the annual fixed asset inventory
  • Completes bank reconciliations, completes audits, monitors department timekeeping, conducts month-end open/close, monitors refunds/returned checks, conducts financial forecasts, approves purchase orders/purchases, finalizes travel documents, per diem, post-travel reconciliation, and manages potential grants
  • Monitors expenditures for each division/program and prepares monthly and quarterly summaries of expenses
  • Managerial responsibility for supervisory, professional, and clerical staff including completing performance plans and evaluations, hiring new staff, training, and coaching and disciplining staff
  • Oversees the review and analysis of state and federal laws, court cases, and legislation that impact financial and accounting functions
  • Performs other duties as assigned
