This position is responsible for the financial, editorial management and development of society journals in a select discipline or disciplines within Science, Technology, and Medicine. The Publishing Editor I position is expected to manage a workload of approximately 15-25 titles, but quantity may vary. We are looking for a candidate who is eager to learn about and grow within the academic publishing industry, and is able to quickly pick up new information, think critically and creatively, and engage meaningfully with the daily work.

**Please note that this position does not focus on writing or editing of our content as it primarily supports the business, technical, and administrative aspects of journal publishing.

Responsibilities:

The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Editorial & Portfolio Management


  • Manage a portfolio of Sage-owned and society journals, balancing strategic development with day-to-day operations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve journal performance, usage, citations, and visibility, including abstracting and indexing opportunities.
  • Implement departmental plans and trackers to support annual goals, liaising with colleagues across departments as needed.
  • Monitor journal performance, including bibliometrics, indexing opportunities, and Open Access developments, and apply insights to support growth.
  • Prepare reports, organize editorial board meetings, and support editor contracts and renewals under manager guidance.
  • Monitor and analyze bibliometrics, finances, and market trends to inform journal and portfolio strategy.

Relationship & Stakeholder Management


  • Build and maintain positive relationships with editors, societies, authors, and reviewers to support journal success.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (marketing, sales, production, etc.) to coordinate journal activities and resolve issues.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with external partners, representing Sage with professionalism.

Financial & Contract Oversight


  • Monitor financial performance of assigned journals and ensure revenue and cost targets are met.
  • Manage society and editor contracts, including renewals, amendments, and negotiations in collaboration with internal stakeholders.

Strategic Contribution


  • Contribute to journal and departmental strategy, providing input on initiatives and projects within defined areas of responsibility.
  • Participate in cross-departmental committees and projects, sharing updates with the team in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate business judgment aligned with Sage's mission, vision, and values.

Mentorship & Collaboration


  • Mentor Editorial Assistants and Associates as available, offering guidance and support to help develop skills.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, solutions-focused team environment.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion


  • Partner with editors and societies to improve diversity, equity, and belonging across author, editor, and board representation.
  • Support initiatives that enhance accessibility and representation within publishing and research communities.

Professional Development & Industry Knowledge


  • Stay current with industry trends, particularly Open Access, abstracting and indexing, and scholarly publishing developments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Sage's strategy and goals, applying them to daily work.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy, urgency, and quality in all tasks, including business communication and reporting.

Administrative & Operational Support


  • Oversee and delegate administrative tasks, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain accurate files, reports, and expense management per company policies.
  • Contribute to departmental projects, acquisitions, and technology initiatives, as needed.

Qualifications and Education:

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

Required


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • At least two years of publishing experience required, preferably with an academic or scientific journal publisher.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the journal publication process.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, Teams, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective public speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must have the ability to learn, understand departmental procedures.
  • Understanding of how research is conducted

Preferred


  • Previous experience as editorial assistant, associate/assistant editor, managing editor, production editor or related positions
  • Intermediate-to-advanced Excel skills, including VBA and Macros
  • Familiarity with R or Python programming languages
  • Proficiency with HTML
