We are currently seeking a skilled IT Subject Matter Expert (SME) for our VA IT Modernization Tool Suite (MTS) program.

To ensure the secure, reliable, and compliant operation of VA's diverse IT toolset within the Modernization Tool Suite (MTS), a dedicated Systems Administrator is essential. This role will oversee the management, configuration, patching, and security of cloud-based and on-premises systems, including Microsoft 365, Active Directory, SharePoint, and custom applications. The Systems Administrator will execute regular updates, monitor security patches, manage risk assessments, and support incident response activities-all critical for maintaining VA's cybersecurity posture, licensing compliance, and system interoperability across the enterprise. Their expertise will be vital in supporting continuous system operations, securing sensitive data, and enabling seamless integration of emerging technologies within VA's evolving IT environment.



Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

The IT Subject Matter Expert (SME) will provide expert-level guidance, analysis, and support across the VA's IT Modernization Tool Suite (MTS). The SME will act as a technical consultant for the selection, integration, deployment, and optimization of MTS tools, ensuring alignment with VA standards, cybersecurity policies, and industry best practices. The SME will facilitate technical assessments, troubleshoot complex issues, provide strategic recommendations, and support continuous improvement efforts to enhance VA's enterprise technology capabilities.

    Technical Consultation & Guidance: Serve as the authoritative subject matter expert on MTS tools, including but not limited to cloud automation, DevSecOps processes, application integration, and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Tool Evaluation & Selection: Assess emerging tools, industry solutions, and custom applications for fit within VA's enterprise architecture. Provide recommendations based on technical feasibility, security, scalability, and compliance.
  • System Design & Integration Support: Support the architecture, planning, and integration of new tools and features across the MTS environment. Ensure solutions adhere to VA standards and facilitate seamless data flow across platforms.
  • Problem Resolution & Troubleshooting: Provide in-depth analysis of complex technical issues, identify root causes, and develop resolution strategies. Support incident investigations and remediation activities.
  • Security & Compliance Guidance: Advise on security controls, ATO processes, and security best practices. Assist the cybersecurity team in developing and maintaining security documentation related to MTS tools.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Develop technical documentation, best practices, and troubleshooting guides. Conduct knowledge sharing sessions and workshops for VA staff and contractors.
  • Strategy & Innovation Support: Assist in defining the roadmap for adoption of new technologies, automation, and continuous integration/deployment practices. Provide insights to improve DevSecOps maturity.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate with project managers, engineers, security officers, and external vendors to coordinate technical activities and ensure project success.


Minimum Requirements

  • Extensive experience working with enterprise IT tools, cloud services, DevSecOps, or similar modern technology stacks.
  • Deep knowledge of cybersecurity standards, VA policies, and federal compliance frameworks.
  • Proven ability to evaluate, recommend, and support the integration of emerging technologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts succinctly.
  • Experience in developing technical documentation, performing system assessments, and supporting enterprise architecture.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, AWS Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, or DevSecOps certifications are preferred.
