Position Title: Police OfficerCompensation: $23.69 - $29.72Department: Public Safety_HStart Date: 09/21/2025About this opportunity: This position is open to both Tier 1 Certified applicants and Non-Certified applicants. The starting rate range is $23.69 to $29.72 per hour. Additionally, there is a $7,500 sign-on bonus for Tier 1 Certified applicants with a minimum of two years qualifying experience.This posting may be used to fill multiple vacancies. What you'll do and what you'll bring: Position Function: Perform functions related to the preservation of public peace and order, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the protection of persons and property, the enforcement of laws of the State of Indiana and the ordinances of the City of Muncie, the enforcement of rules and regulations of Ball State University, and the safeguarding of individual and collective rights of the citizenry. Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Properly operate and maintain acceptable levels of proficiency in the use of department issued or approved equipment. Requires the physical ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Requires the physical fitness level that meets current criminal justice standards. Requires the physical ability to sit for extended periods of time and drive patrol vehicles. Requires the ability to run, jump, stand, and walk for long periods of time, and the ability to physically subdue an offender with reasonable force and have reasonable strength to perform necessary lifesaving functions. Task requires a wide field of vision and the visual ability to perceive depth and distinguish colors. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions. Task requires the mental ability to read, write, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information, and to receive, comprehend and follow oral instructions and information. Requires the mental ability to analyze problem situations and adjust to varying work assignments, use judgment and discretion, and demonstrate appropriate written and verbal communication skills. Task requires use of vehicles, bicycles, pistols, long guns, shot guns, chemical spray, impact weapons, knives, and any other tool used as a defensive weapon. Task requires use of Automated External Defibrillator and the ability to performCPR. 2. Patrol campus and university property by vehicle and on foot; conduct building and security checks; report any unusual or suspicious conditions. 3. Investigate disturbances or criminal violations occurring on university or surrounding property; perform all tasks necessary to restore peace and order or apprehend possible offenders. 4. Investigate vehicle accidents on university or surrounding property; conduct appropriate investigations, provide necessary emergency care, and assist as necessary. 5. Act as first responder to all fire alarms andEMScalls on university or surrounding property; assist emergency services in any way possible and administer aid in all situations to the level of training achieved. Enforce Ball State, City of Muncie, and State of Indiana parking and traffic regulations; direct traffic when required. Requires the physical fitness level that meets current criminal justice standards. Requires the physical ability to sit for extended periods of time and drive patrol vehicles. May require the ability to run, jump, stand, and walk for long periods of time. Task requires a wide field of vision and the visual ability to perceive depth and distinguish colors. Employee is exposed to outside environmental conditions. Task requires the mental ability to read, write, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information. Task requires use of vehicles and bicycles. 7. Issue citations and effect custodial arrest of law violators. 8. Assist members of the community and other law enforcement agencies in an appropriate manner. May require the physical ability to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Requires the physical fitness level that meets current criminal justice standards. Requires the physical ability to sit for extended periods of time and drive patrol vehicles. Prepare and write detailed reports; investigate all accidents, criminal cases, and incidents to provide complete documentation for Ball State; provide necessary information to assist the prosecutor's office in preparing criminal cases. Task requires the mental ability to read, write reports, keep records, pay attention to detail, testify in court, and comprehend and follow instructions and information. Requires the mental ability to analyze problem situations and adjust to varying work assignments, use judgment and discretion, and demonstrate appropriate written and verbal communication skills. 11. Provide security/escort and transportation for campus cash transactions. 12. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: 1. High School Diploma orGED. Preferred Qualifications: 1. Associate's degree or two years of college or equivalent experience in law enforcement or two years of active military service in the U.S. Armed Forces. 2. Bachelor's degree. 3. Successful completion of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy basic training course, or completion of an equivalent training program approved by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.
