Position Summary

The Stumptown Creative Director is a hands-on visionary, leading the creative expression of our iconic brand. This role is responsible for driving brand relevance, consumer engagement, and business growth through integrated campaigns, marketing materials, and brand activations. Oversee the creative process from concept to completion-ensuring alignment with business objectives, brand identity, and consumer trends.

In partnership with marketing leadership and cross-functional teams, guide the evolution of the Stumptown brand while leading and mentoring a high-performing in-house creative team. Collaborate with external partners, manage timelines and budgets, and foster a culture of innovation, inclusion, and excellence. This is a key leadership role that requires both strategic thinking and a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude to execute world-class creative work to grow the brand and drive sales of our beans and cold brew products across retail cafes, away-from-home, ecommerce, and CPG channels.

Essential Functions
  • Drive brand relevance, consumer engagement, and business growth through the creation and execution of campaigns, marketing materials, and activations.

  • Translate business objectives into clear creative strategies. Oversee the creative process from concept to completion, ensuring that all design elements have a consistent voice, tone and visual direction.

  • Collaborate with the Head of Marketing, sales channel leads, and cross-functional partners to develop integrated campaigns delivering on business priorities and long-term growth objectives, while ensuring creative alignment across all initiatives.

  • Continue to evolve the brand, staying true to our heritage and values while remaining relevant with current and emerging audiences.

  • Manage and lead creative reviews and presentations, present concepts to leadership and cross-functional team members to influence business and creative decisions.

  • Lead and supervise the work of the creative team, ensuring high standards of design and brand consistency.

  • Together with the Marketing Coordinator, establish and manage creative timelines.

  • As a senior leader within the Marketing and Creative teams, foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing culture that encourages innovation, growth, and excellence.

  • Act as a connector and problem-solver across departments, helping translate marketing and business challenges into effective, creative solutions.

  • Hands-on design in addition to leadership.

  • Stay current with industry trends, innovation, our consumer and competitors, using insights to inform creative strategies.

  • Oversee the creative budget. Make recommendations on resource allocation to deliver project goals.

Supervisory responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise the work of the creative team, ensuring high standards of design and brand consistency.

  • Manage, mentor and develop the two members of the in-house design team. Provide direction to external agencies, freelance copy writers and designers as needed.

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in a creative or design role, with at least 3 years in a Creative Director, Art Director, or similar leadership position.

  • Bachelor's degree in art, graphic design, marketing, or a related field.

  • A strong portfolio that includes brand development work (e.g., brand books, style guides), multichannel campaigns, and measurable business results.

  • Highly skilled in the full Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign) and Figma.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success collaborating cross-functionally across teams.

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills and the ability to effectively convey creative ideas and concepts.

  • Deep understanding of multichannel marketing, creative KPIs, and performance metrics.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills; proactive problem solver.

  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and deliver on deadlines; adaptable to change.

  • Experience collaborating on projects with internal and external partners with lean budgets during periods of aggressive growth.

  • Ability and desire to work with a diverse population with an eye for equity and inclusion.

Work environment
  • Hybrid 50/50 role with onsite at SE Portland facility

  • Standard office hours with availability to work limited evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Standard office environment, with open office plan

  • Varied levels of office and production noise

  • Works independently with minimal supervision
