The Department of English invites applications for two 9-month Writing Instructor positions with a start date of August 2025. Applications are encouraged by candidates with experience teaching first-year writing to culturally and linguistically diverse students. These one-year positions are reappointed annually, contingent upon performance and departmental needs.
The Department of English offers an undergraduate degree in English and minor programs in Dramatic Arts, English, and African American Literature. Our innovative academic programs prepare students to assume leading roles in society, industry, and the academy.

Department Required Skills
Faculty in the Department of English seek candidates with demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence in a higher education setting and an ability to implement technologies that engage students in the learning process. We are especially interested in candidates who focus on student success and student learning as evidenced by their instructional delivery.

Applicants must hold a M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
Applicants must have at least two years of undergraduate teaching experience and demonstrated ability to teach foundational writing in general education.

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
WSSU seeks committed and engaged full-time faculty members for the Department of English who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising

  • Teach a full load (5:5) of undergraduate writing courses in general education via face-to-face, online, and hybrid approaches.
  • Construct detailed course syllabi.
  • Facilitate high quality, engaging instruction.
  • Leverage various technologies (e.g., Canvas, EAB Navigate) to communicate regularly with students, monitor student progress, and provide feedback on student success outcomes.
  • Engage with students during mandatory office hours each week.


Service and Engagement

  • Attend departmental and College meetings consistently.
  • Serve on departmental-level committees.
  • Serve on College- and university-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
