Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose |
Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President of Development, the Executive Director of Estate and Planned Giving will lead and manage a strategic and comprehensive centralized planned giving program that adheres to industry best practices and oversee the planned giving responsibilities of two staff. The Executive Director of Estate and Planned Giving is responsible for securing legacy gifts to University of the Pacific and stewarding long-term funding relationships. From a portfolio of assigned prospects, the Executive Director of Estate and Planned Giving collaborates with other gift officers to secure new legacy commitments and/or current gifts of complex assets and raises awareness of legacy giving within the Pacific community. |
Essential Functions |
- Manages a portfolio of 100-125 planned giving prospects with a target of 8-10 face-to-face visits per month; through visits moves potential donors forward to solicitation and closure; and maintains stewardship activities.
- Ensures goals are met with an identified minimum of number of planned gift intentions which are recorded annually through collaboration with gift officers and personal production. Planned gifts may include documented bequest expectancies, new life income gifts, IRA beneficiary designations and qualified charitable distributions, life insurance beneficiary designations and realized distributions, real estate and business interest transfers and complex gifting structures and gifts of other appreciated assets.
- in addition to their individual contributions, sets the vision and leads the Planned Giving program and must be able to work with senior University administrators, major gift officers, alumni relations and with schools/colleges to identify funding opportunities and develop prospect-to-donor strategies.
- Produces well-written, accurate and timely follow-up and related planned gift illustrations, correspondence such as comprehensive proposals, contact reports, cover, and thank you letters, e-mails, and donor briefings.
- Provides guidance on solicitation strategies, especially related to tax and estate planning benefits, to all major gift officers.
- Works collaboratively to develop and maintain a planned gift a multi-channel marketing program.
- Partners with Donor Relations to recognize and engage Heritage Society members.
- Educates and motivates University Development colleagues to recognize planned gift opportunities and communicate the benefits to achieve annual goals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Seven (7) years of planned giving fundraising experience
- One (1) year of experience working closely with legal and financial professionals in designing and executing planned giving instruments.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in higher education fundraising
- Specialized understanding of tax laws that impact charitable giving and charitable gift planning structures
- Training in deferred giving software, including current laws and national best practices
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Certification as a planned giving specialist
- Entrepreneurial spirit
- Demonstrated success and effectiveness in major and planned gift prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of gifts
- A commitment to higher education, understanding of university academics and scholarship and ability to articulate a compelling case for annual discretionary support of private higher education and student life.
- Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
- Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel
Work is frequently performed in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Must be prepared to work non-business hours and weekends. Frequent travel both local and overnight. Frequent use of laptops and cellular devices to access data while traveling.
Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record. |
Hiring Range |
$125,000 - $145,000 We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. |
