POSITION TITLE: Law Clerk

LOCATION: St. Paul, MN

HOURS/STATUS: Part-time (up to 20 hr./wk.) / Non-exempt

EMPLOYEE GROUP: Unclassified

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Temporary Assignment

POSITION SUMMARY:

The law clerk will conduct legal research and writing for the legal department, containing seven (7) attorneys with Education Minnesota. The position may include assisting attorneys with grievance arbitrations, licensure matters, long-term disability appeals, or other matters arriving from unionized public school district settings. Law clerks receive substantive work experience and gain exposure to Minnesota laws pertaining to public education, data practices, and labor and employment law.

This position is ideal for a 2L law student in Minnesota, but other candidates will receive consideration. Work is performed both in the office and remotely on an as-needed basis, so hours may fluctuate based on organizational needs, but we can accommodate a law school schedule, including breaks for finals and other school commitments. The position is at-will, but most law clerks work the entire academic year (both semesters) and receive an offer to clerk for approximately 30 hours per week in the summer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with legal research and writing projects overseen by staff attorneys and the General Counsel
  • Update legal guides and record-keeping systems with summaries of recent court and arbitration decisions
  • Assist attorneys in preparation for arbitrations and administrative hearings
  • Accurately record hours worked and assignments completed for documentation and billing purposes
  • Participate in legal meetings with attorneys to review viability of cases for arbitration
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong reading comprehension, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis
  • Ability to manage multiple research and writing projects and maintain regular communication with multiple attorneys about their needs and deadlines
  • Ability to draft persuasive advocacy letters on behalf of clients
  • Ability to summarize judicial and regulatory decisions verbally and in written memoranda to attorneys

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • HS diploma or GED
  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated from an accredited law school

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Academic and/or working experience in labor, employment, and/or education law
  • Currently in 2L year of law school
  • Availability for weekly in-person legal meetings on Wednesday afternoons from 12:00-2:00pm

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Work will primarily occur in our headquarters in St. Paul, though some remote work is permitted, and can accommodate a law school schedule
  • Some possibility for travel within Minnesota for hearings depending on availability and attorney needs

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is in a general office environment. This position will interact with employees, vendors, members, and the public on a somewhat regular basis. These interactions require judgment and discretion that can involve confidential information, private information and some disagreeable human interactions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee is required to: CONTINUOUSLY sit, talk, and hear; FREQUENTLY stand, walk, and repetitively use hands dexterously (use fingers to type, handle, feel), reach with hands and arms, bend and physically lift and carry up to 10 pounds; OCCASIONALLY lift up to 25 pounds and infrequently travel by various conveyances (e.g., air, rail, auto).

CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION:

Maintain confidential information related to staff, the organization, and related data for members.

STARTING SALARY:

This position pays an hourly rate of $25.00.
