The Tennessee Attorney Generals Office is a full-service law firm, representing the State in litigation, transactional matters, and investigations and providing day-to-day legal advice to a wide variety of state entities and officials. The Attorney Generals Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 21 legal divisions within 6 sections.

Job Overview:

The Office of the Tennessee Attorney General is seeking a dynamic, digital media-savvy Assistant Communications Director to fulfill the following responsibilities: leading digital media strategy and content creation; assisting in developing and managing relationships with local, state, and national media; drafting and distributing official communications; and managing media inquiries. The ideal candidate (i) understands the work of a law office, (ii) is a sharp and serious communicator, excellent writer, and strategic thinker who excels at creating engaging online content, and (iii) thrives in a fast-paced, high-profile environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Media Relations & Strategy:

  • Develop and manage strong relationships with reporters, editors, and producers.
  • Arrange and attend background meetings with key journalists, often in coordination with the Attorney General, Communications Director, and senior staff.
  • Assist in the coordination of media interviews across all platforms (TV, radio, print, podcasts, etc.).
  • Work closely and collaboratively with executive leadership and internal departments to ensure messaging alignment across all communications in collaboration with the Communications Director.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with executive leadership and internal departments to assist in developing and executing long-term communications strategies aligned with the Offices mission and goals.
  • Coordinate with other state agencies and government offices to ensure consistent messaging and collaborative outreach.

Content Creation & Messaging:

  • Draft press releases, media advisories, talking points, pull quotes, and other official communications in close coordination with executive leadership and internal departments.
  • Contribute to the development of public remarks and messaging documents.
  • Maintain an up-to-date media briefing book and press kit.
  • Operate in-office studio equipment, including cameras, lighting, and teleprompter, to produce high-quality video content.
  • Track and report on media coverage, digital engagement, and performance to inform strategy.

Website & Digital Platform Management:

  • Oversee social media accounts and digital marketing efforts.
  • Create engaging digital content, including graphics, short videos, and creative campaigns.
  • Monitor social media trends and analytics to optimize outreach.
  • Manage and maintain the website, including content updates, news, and press postings, while ensuring accuracy of information and timeliness of postings.

Media Inquiry Response:

  • Serve as the day-to-day point of contact for all media inquiries.
  • Research and gather information from internal departments to provide timely, accurate responses.
  • Ensure the Office remains responsive, truthful, and respectful in all communications with the press.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelors degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Media, Political Science, or related field 3-5 years of relevant experience in media relations, public affairs, or government or legal communications
  2. Work experience in a law office or legal environment is preferred.
  3. Strong writing and editing skills with a portfolio of press releases and media content.
  4. Experience managing social media platforms and digital campaigns
  5. Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners
  6. Comfort working closely with executive leadership
  7. Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple priorities
  8. Proficiency with professional video and camera equipment, lighting, and studio operations
  9. Familiarity with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, MailChimp, and video editing software is preferred.
