The H&S Family of Bakeries are a network of 10 bakeries and multiple distribution centers along the East Coast all committed to one thing: producing the best quality bread products. H&S Family of Bakeries includes Northeast Foods, H&S Bakery and Schmidt Baking Co. Together, our baked goods can be found in a wide range of establishments, from fast food and quick-service restaurants to cafeterias, hospitals, grocery stores and universities to name a few. The Food Safety Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring our customers receive the highest quality and safest products and that our products always adhere to food safety standards and requirements. The FSM also works collaboratively with cross-functional teams responsible for production, sanitation, quality systems, and facilities management to ensure integrity and excellence of product. Supports all risk management systems and tactics to ensure product excellence. In this role you will:
- Develop and implement food safety training programs for employees to ensure they are aware of proper food handling procedures to meet customer, regulatory, and internal standards. Conducts regular & unannounced audits and inspections, documenting and communicating results in clear and actional ways to support appropriate change and improvement.
- Monitor food safety standards and regulations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
- Support existing food safety programs through internal audits, recertification audit support, and corrective actions.
- Assist and directs employees in meeting high quality and food safety standards in all plant operations.
- Establish and maintain a food safety performance measurement system in support of corrective action and improvement efforts.
- Work closely with various departments and teams, including production, sanitation, maintenance, shipping and receiving, and more.
- Conduct and participate in group calls to plan, respond to problems to improve outcomes.
- Plan, coordinate, and participate in certification audits (GFSI / BRC). Help all facilities in being prepared and compliant. Serve as a liaison between employees, customer requirements and 3rd party audits, representing the company.
- Participate in and may lead investigations to determine and address root causes of special situations, regulatory inspections, customer audits to assure proper investigation, root cause and resolution.
- Track state audits for the distribution centers and follow up with their corrective actions.
- Complete all required FDA facility (includes distribution centers) registrations as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of progressive quality systems, food safety, or related experience to perform the essential job functions.
- Possess and maintain Certified Food Safety Manager (e.g., ServSafe) and HACCP certification.
- Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent directly related experience may substitute for some or all of the required education.
- Skill in adapting leadership style to needs of a diverse audience such as front-line employees, external inspectors, executives, and customers.
- Strong knowledge of food safety regulations and standards (FDA, GFSI, BRC, etc.).
- Experience in leading and participating in certification audits and inspections.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and food safety software.
- Must work with people and aid in their development.
- Pest control knowledge to aid in control, identification, and follow up if a special situation occurs.
- Excellent organizational and coordination skills.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- This position involves work performed in both office and factory settings.
- The employee may be exposed to typical manufacturing conditions, including varying levels of noise, dust, odors and fumes.
- This role may require the ability to move to all areas of a plant, including production areas.
- Physical activities include standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, climbing stairs or ladders, as necessary to access different work areas.
- Must be able to operate standard office equipment (e.g., computers, printers, phones) as required by the position.
- Overnight travel (land and air) is required 25% of time (average travel is 1.5 - 3 out of 5 days per week).
