The Anesthesiology Clinical Coordinator (ACC) will function as a coordinator between the Division of Anesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine and the other hospital-wide specialties for cases requiring anesthesia. Additionally, the ACC will assist with clinical care in the operating room. The ACC will assess patient's health status and readiness for anesthesia prior to the commencement of a case, provide assistance to the anesthesiologist during the delivery of sedation or general anesthesia, and will be a contact person when questions arise regarding the feasibility of doing cases in various anesthetizing locations. The ACC will function as an educational resource person to non-anesthesia personnel throughout the hospital, and develop and present subject matter to benefit staff, patients and their families as needed. Additionally, the ACC will have a leadership position on the Hospital Sedation Committee (Co-Chair) and will be heavily involved with the review and follow up of the Sedation Committee Monthly Triggers, sedation adverse events (actual and potential) throughout the hospital by any service delivering sedation and revise the Hospital Sedation Policy and Procedures as needed. Lastly, the ACC will support ongoing process improvement and quality improvement initiative involving anesthesiology across various anesthetizing locations, as well as support for clinical research projects within the division.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
BSN (Required)
Master's Degree (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Understanding of sedation and IV therapy; ability to work independently as a leader and as part of a team; have superior organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills

Required Licenses and Certifications
Registered Nurse (Required)

Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) (Required)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (Required)
Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) (Preferred)

Functional Accountabilities
Professional Practice/Research



  • Demonstrate a collegial and respectful relationship with peers, physicians and other departments hospital wide.

  • Perform one-on-one consultations and formulate individualized treatment plans and provide attentive follow-up.


  • Perform in a leadership role on the Hospital Sedation Committee.


  • Support/participate in the Division of Nursing's performance improvement process.


Clinical Coordination



  • Consult and collaborate with patients, families, other nurses and physicians in shared decision making, advocate for patient and family.


  • Responsible and accountable for clinical care for patients undergoing procedures in the OR and non-OR areas and area workflow; develop pertinent goals based on patient response to illness, health promotion and program expected outcomes; implement suitable, evidence-based nursing interventions; provide careful and complete documentation of care provided.


  • Coordinate care across disciplines to provide continuity of care for patients receiving anesthesia.


  • Direct and participate in the development of patient care policies and protocols in order to advise and guide practice.


  • Develop and contribute to quality improvement and process improvement activities within the anesthesia division.


Compliance



  • Responsible for the safe and efficient nursing care of patients receiving anesthesia and sedation in non-OR and OR areas


  • Establish and maintain medical equipment and supplies, include a plan to promote safe and effective use of equipment.


  • Ensure regulatory requirements are met and anesthetizing area is in a constant state of readiness.


  • Initiate ways to improve operations through quality improvement and implement related solutions (i.e., The Joint Commission requirements for Sedation)


  • Keep up to date on the application of health informatics systems such as diagnosis and treatment technology linked to patient care.


Leadership

  • Formulate the orientation and education of perioperative staff regarding sedation.
