Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

The Materials Testing Technician performs a wide array of important quality assurance testing on transportation project materials. Working in both the laboratory and out in the field, you will conduct materials testing, inspections, research, and investigations of construction materials, all while applying methodologies commonly accepted in roadway and bridge construction and maintenance, and ensuring compliance with established standards, specifications, and provisions. We Require

  • Two years ofexperience working in a construction materials laboratory engaged in both field and laboratory testing of materials utilized in the construction and maintenance of streets, highways, bridges, and associated structures

  • High school diploma or GED

  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain one of the following certifications within six months from the hire date: ATTI Field certification and/or ACI Field certification, and Nuclear Gauge short course certification

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire and have an acceptable driving record

  • ATTI certifications, including Asphalt, Soils, Field Certification Level 1, and/or Nuclear Gauge certification

Job Contributions

  • Perform laboratory testing of all construction materials utilized in the construction of assigned projects

  • Perform field inspections and testing to ensure adequacy of construction materials and methods

  • Perform field inspections of vendor/supplier facilities, equipment, and manufacturing capabilities

  • Participate in all assigned proficiency sample testing and on-site certification inspections performed by other national certifying agencies

  • Complete and report test results of assigned special research projects in accordance with instructions specified by the requester or the laboratory supervisor

  • Prepare and submit inspection and/or testing reports and summaries for review

  • Perform maintenance and calibrate/verify the status of laboratory testing equipment

  • Participate in training and assist in training new Materials Testing Technicians as needed

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position requires the employee to be in the office/field or customer-facing for all hours worked

  • Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noises, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. The position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

Machines, tools, equipment, software, and hardware

  • A variety of laboratory and field equipment to perform testing on asphalt, concrete, soil, and aggregates. This includes sieves, balances, ovens, nuclear gauges, manual and automatic compactors, concrete testing tools, and moisture testers. Fieldwork may involve core drills, density devices, and sampling tools. The technician also uses computers and software such as Microsoft Office, PDF editors, and basic data entry tools to document results, along with a laboratory management system

Protective equipment required

  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times while performing laboratory or field duties. This typically includes safety glasses, high-visibility vests, steel-toed boots, gloves, and hearing protection as needed. In some cases, additional protection such as hard hats, dust masks or respirators, and lab coats or coveralls may be required, depending on the task and exposure to chemicals, dust, or high temperatures
