Salary: The previously determined range for this position was $38.60./hr to $83.23/hr*. Final rate offered will be determined by the collective bargaining agreement, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. Position Summary

Administrative Nurse I is responsible for directing patient care, related unit activities and personnel on an assigned shift utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework in order to ensure quality patient care and work flow. The ANI identifies work priorities, determines and coordinates daily assignments and staff scheduling. The Administrative Nurse I takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Administrative Nurse I functions as role model who directs patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes the required orientation program and unit-specific competencies On specified units, direct patient care (modified assignment) is provided, demonstrating clinical knowledge, skills, and expertise.

  • Makes patient care assignments and changes assignments as required according to the patient's/unit's needs

  • Reviews staff schedules utilizing the Electronic scheduling tool.

  • Coordinate staff breaks/lunches to ensure continuity of patient care.

  • Directs workflow to facilitate timely patient care.

  • Acts as a resource for unit personnel and aids in resolving questions related to policy, standards, and procedures

  • Demonstrates critical thinking, conflict management, and customer service skills as a role model and problem solver for the organization and unit.


  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.

  • Recognizes and responds to patient care issues, providing direction, feedback, and follow-up to staff, managers, and other healthcare team members.

  • Contributes feedback to the performance evaluation of unit personnel.

  • Procures necessary clinical supplies and equipment. Follows up on repairs/maintenance of equipment as needed

  • Builds collaborative relationships with physicians to promote teamwork.

  • Maintains overall knowledge of all patients' status to assist nursing and medical team members.

    Professional/Leadership

  • Advocates for patients, families, their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.

  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.

  • Recognizes and supports Shared Leadership as the selected method of nursing governance.

  • Actively engaged in shared leadership through membership in a governing council; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.

  • Demonstrates accountability for job performance by: (1) seeking opportunities to enhance job skills and knowledge; (2) maintaining conditions of employment (RN licensure, BLS, and other required unit-specific certifications).

  • Assists in the accountability of other staff members to enhance job skills and maintain conditions of employment (i.e., competencies, CPR, and licensure).

  • Receives and provides feedback to health care team members regarding performance/practice.

    Organizational

  • Adheres to the UI Health's Code of Conduct. Treat patients/families, staff, students, and visitors respectfully.

  • Adheres to Nursing's time, overtime, and attendance policies.

  • Completes electronic learning modules and related programs as assigned by UI Health by the established date.

  • Complies with University Health Services TB, flu compliance, and fit-testing requirements.

  • Utilizes established communication channels/chain of command to escalate or resolve patient care problems.

  • Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem-solving and resolution.

    Education/Research

  • Serves as a role model and/or resource to other nursing staff and students.

  • In collaboration with the Patient Care Manager/Director/the Ambulatory CNCII assists with unit-based quality initiatives and provides feedback and education to staff.

  • Access the medical center intranet/outlook for relevant communication and to review and interpret changes in policy, procedure, and other information pertinent to practice Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and UI Health.

  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identifying learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.

    Reporting Structure

    This person works independently within the scope of nursing practice. The Director, acting as coach and mentor, provides direction, guidance, and feedback regarding practice and performance. The employee's performance is evaluated annually in writing and more frequently if needed. The employee and Director, Patient Care Services, meet on an as-needed basis for coaching and mentoring, where support, guidance, and direction can be given.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    2. One year of RN experience.
    3. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications.
    4. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers.
    5. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training.
    6. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
    • 2 years of related relevant clinical experience and/or in an ambulatory care setting
    • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, families and health care providers Is self-directed and works well in groups/teams exercising sound clinical judgment
    • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
