How You'll Contribute:



The Engineer in Charge (EIC) plays a critical leadership role in delivering high-quality broadcast television, live event, and streaming productions. Acting as the principal technical authority on-site and in the field, the EIC oversees the planning, installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all technical systems - ensuring productions run seamlessly and meet or exceed industry standards.


The EIC works closely with production, creative, and operations teams to translate complex technical requirements into robust, efficient workflows that deliver exceptional viewer experiences across multiple platforms.



What You'll Do:



1. Project & Technical Leadership



  • Lead all technical aspects of broadcast and live event production from concept through execution for assigned events.
  • Collaborate with producers and directors to assess needs and develop technical solutions that align with production goals and budgets.
  • Provide input and recommendations for optimizing broadcast trucks, flypacks, or studio control rooms, ensuring all gear is configured correctly and ready for deployment.
  • Cross train with other staffed EIC's to provide backfill services as needed.


2. Crew Supervision & Team Development



  • Supervise and coordinate engineers, technicians, freelancers, and contractors to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Provide clear technical direction and delegate tasks effectively during setup, live operation, and strike.
  • Train and mentor junior engineers and technical crew to ensure knowledge transfer and continuous skills improvement.


3. Live Production Operations



  • Monitor and manage all live signal paths, including video, audio, intercom, and network, ensuring high broadcast quality and signal integrity.
  • Implement live redundancy strategies and backup workflows to minimize risk of failure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues quickly and effectively, even under time-critical conditions.


4. Systems Maintenance & Upgrades



  • Oversee regular inspection, maintenance, and repair of in-scope broadcast and streaming equipment.
  • Recommend and implement system upgrades or new technology solutions to improve production quality and efficiency.


5. Compliance & Safety



  • Ensure all operations comply with broadcast standards, FCC and local regulatory requirements, and copyright rules where applicable.
  • Enforce rigorous safety procedures for equipment rigging, cabling, power distribution, and on-site crew conduct.


6. Client & Stakeholder Relations



  • Act as the main technical liaison for clients, venues, vendors, and third-party service providers for assigned events.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Attend applicable production meetings, tech scouts, and debriefs to align technical requirements with client expectations.


7. Documentation & Reporting



  • Complete detailed production logs, maintenance reports, and post-event technical summaries.
  • Track budgetary impacts of technical decisions and provide input for future planning.



Working Conditions:


This position involves work in studios, control rooms, mobile production units (OB trucks or flypacks), outdoor venues, and client locations. The role requires extended periods of standing, working at heights or in confined spaces, and frequent travel.

What You'll Bring:


Education & Certifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Media Production, or equivalent practical experience


Required Skills/Qualifications:




  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in live broadcast engineering, remote production, or live event technical operations.
  • Proven expertise with professional video switchers, audio consoles, routing systems, camera control units, intercom, RF systems, encoders/decoders, and streaming platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of IP-based production workflows, bonded cellular, satellite uplink/downlink, and content delivery networks (CDNs).
  • Ability to read and produce complex wiring diagrams, CAD drawings, and technical schematics.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills and a proven track record of solving problems under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work in varied physical conditions.
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and willingness to travel regionally or nationally.
  • Flexible schedule: evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required to support live events.



Preferred Certifications:



  • SBE Certification (CBT, CBNT, or higher)
  • AVIXA CTS Certification
  • OSHA 10/30 or industry-recognized site safety training
  • Manufacturer-specific certifications (Grass Valley, EVS, Panasonic, Dalet, etc.)
