Hourly Rate: $22.44

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing routine technical laboratory/research related tasks for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine's Center for Substance Abuse Research.

The laboratory assistant requires expeience with behavioral assays to test effects of addictive drugs in rats and mice. Specifically, position requires the ability to conduct surgery for rat self-adminisration experiments and to run rat self-administration experiments; position requires ability to conduct other behavioral assays inlcuding locomotor, conditioned place preference, forced swim assay to test depression-like effects, and elevated plus maze or elevated zero maze experiments to assess anxiety-like effects. The lab assistant requires ability to dissect brain regions such as the nucleus accumbens and amygdala and to use qPCR to quantify mRNA levels of neurochemical markers in these brain regions. The lab assistant requires prior experience with glutamatergic drugs, such as glutamate releasers like troriluzole, and experience with psychostimulant drugs such as MDPV and cocaine. Positoin requires ability to manage protocols (IACUC), and to keep those protocols up to date to maintain laboratory compliance. Positoin requires outstandig verbal and communication skills.

General basic quantitative skills and basic familiarity with applicable systems (database, computer applications); problem solving, analysis, planning, communications (reporting on outcomes/findings, grant applications), prioritizing, ability to follow instructions with precision, project planning, and proceed relatively independently once tasks are assigned.

These prerequisite skills are essential to the project currently underway and to further research efforts in that they contribute to advancing our understanding of research objectives through various funding mechanisms. Prior use of statistical analysis is essential for the person filling this position. In addition to contributing to the conduct of externally funded projects, this position also requires management and ordering of laboratory supplies, animal usage and maintenance of equipment. Finally this individul musts be trained and then help to train additional personnel in lab protocols, standards, policies, and procedures.

Required Education & Experience:
At least 6 months of related laboratory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills & Abilities:
*Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records of research performed to NIH standards.
*Demonstrated ability to perform routine Westerns Blots, and enzyme-linked immunoassays.
*Demonstrated ability to operate standard office equipment and software including MS Office Suite.
*Demonstrated ability to work with mice in a research setting.
*Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
*Excellent interpersonal skills, along with the ability to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
*Ability to work nights/weekends/early mornings.

Preferred:
*Bachelor's degree
*Biology/chemistry/psychology/neuroscience major or minor
*prior laboratory experience in cellular biology, anatomical, pharmacological and or behavioral techniques
