HDR Engineering is seeking an Electrical Coordinator/EIT to join our growing Building Engineering Services professionals in our Walnut Creek, CA office.


In the role of Electrical Design Coordinator/EIT, we'll count on you to:

Conduct analyses to develop electrical design designs and assist in the preparation of electrical plans and specifications. Perform routine electrical engineering assignments, with instruction from the Project Engineer or Project Manager regarding the expected results. Work on projects with clear, specified objectives and limited variables. Projects may be related to technology clients, municipal, federal, and local government clients that include water/wastewater facilities, large pumping projects, military installations, building distribution systems and campus distribution systems under the supervision of senior electrical engineers and staff professional electrical engineers. Work on small projects or assist more-senior engineers on larger projects. Work with assistance from Project Engineers, other Electrical EITs or Technicians as needed.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:


  • Assist with designs for upgrades, expansions of medium voltage and low voltage distribution, and green field design.
  • Prepare electrical design (plans and specifications) for projects per NFPA 70 requirements to include various systems such as switchgear, pumping plants, pumps, lighting, HVAC, fire protection detection and suppression panels, and other miscellaneous loads.
  • Engineering of physical design (above & below grade) for conduit and cable routing in sufficient detail to construct.
  • Assist with drawing preparation, markup, back check for electrical equipment\conduit arrangement drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Specify conduit and cable, prepare calculations to support the design.
  • Assist with site surveys and verification of installation.
  • Assist with power system studies, including arc flash assessment.
  • Assist with engineering calculations, make recommendations to develop electrical design options, and assist in the preparation of engineering procedures and specifications.
  • Assist with data processing and statistical analysis, development of data plots and graphs.
  • Participating in project site visits in conjunction with the Project Manager, Sr. Electrical Engineer, and other disciplines.
  • Some travel may be required
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.
  • Candidates hired without their EIT will have the title of "Coordinator" and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • 2+ years experience designing electrical lighting, power and systems for building projects
  • Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED desired but not required
  • Strong computer skills using Matlab, and Visual Basic
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to coordinate work with other disciplines and CAD/BIM designers either in person or virtually
  • Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of electrical drawings and basic electrical theory
  • Knowledge and familiarity with NFPA 70 and IEEE standards
  • Initiative, drive, and enthusiasm are key character attributes desired

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis
  • Desire to pursue growth opportunities and obtain registration
  • Strong computer skills using AutoCAD and Microsoft Office, Revit, SKM, AGI and Easy Power
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

The expected compensation range for this position is $82,663.00 - $111,838.00 annually depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
