Primary Function

The Technical Writer Lead under the WSMR TEAS contract is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end technical documentation process across multiple projects, ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and consistency of all written deliverables. This role provides leadership and quality assurance for the development of technical manuals, standard operating procedures, maintenance instructions, user guides, training materials, and other mission-critical documentation that support operations at White Sands Missile Range. The Technical Writer Lead assigns and tracks work to a team of Technical Writers, monitors workload distribution, and ensures adherence to contract requirements, industry standards, and Army formatting guidelines. Additionally, the Lead conducts editorial reviews, manages version control, and collaborates with engineers, subject matter experts, and project managers to capture complex technical data in a clear and user-friendly format. The Technical Writer Lead plays a vital role in supporting the range's test and evaluation mission by producing accurate, timely, and compliant documentation that meets the evolving needs of both internal stakeholders and external customers.

Essential Duties

  • Lead and manage the creation, review, editing, and finalization of technical documentation including test procedures, analysis reports, technical manuals, operating procedures, and engineering documentation in support of WSMR Test and Evaluation missions.
  • Ensure all documentation adheres to Army and DoD standards, technical writing conventions, contract-specific formatting guidelines, and security classification requirements.
  • Supervise, mentor, and coordinate the efforts of a team of Technical Writers. Assign workloads, monitor progress, and provide feedback to ensure high performance and consistent quality across all deliverables.
  • Work closely with engineers, analysts, scientists, and subject matter experts to gather, interpret, and accurately convey complex technical information in a clear, concise, and audience-appropriate format.
  • Maintain document version control, updates, and archival processes. Ensure timely delivery and availability of current documentation in appropriate repositories or systems.
  • Evaluate and improve technical writing processes, templates, and workflows to enhance efficiency and maintain consistency across projects and documentation types.
  • Develop and maintain documentation that supports test planning, data collection, and results analysis for test programs conducted at White Sands Missile Range.
  • Perform thorough editing for grammar, style, technical accuracy, and readability, ensuring that all documentation is professional and publication ready.
  • Provide regular updates to program leadership on documentation status, risks, and team performance. Represent the technical writing team in cross-functional meetings.
  • Ensure all technical documentation is handled in compliance with applicable security protocols, information assurance policies, and data retention standards.

  • Advanced computer skills specifically using technical writing products; also Microsoft Office Suite; Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word; ability to learn additional computer skills or software programs.
  • Strong analytical skills. Must be able to interpret large of amounts of data and isolate pertinent information and facts.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write complex reports and correspondence.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff.
  • Must be trustworthy - this position will routinely handle confidential information.
  • Effective oral and technical written communication skills to communicate complex information effectively and clearly in high pressure, emergency situations to others.
  • Ability to use general office equipment such as fax, phone, copier, etc.
  • Ability to follow a process.
  • Strong professional customer service skills, including active listening, prompt service and follow-up.
  • Ability to learn and understand corporate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or enrolled in 4-year degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years' work experience in technical writing.
  • Previous military / government Logistics experience preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to maintain a government security clearance.
  • Ability to pass background and drug screening.

Working Environment

This is an on-site, fast-paced multi-tasking customer service-oriented environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. Adaptability regarding schedule and task changes is necessary to accommodate changing priorities.This position is normally 5 days a week M-F. However, weekends and after hour support may be required.
