Job Summary

The Research Assistant will assist in experimental cosmology research in Prof. Bock's BICEP Array program. BICEP Array is leading the search for a polarized signal in the Cosmic Microwave Background from a primordial background of gravitational waves through mm-wave observations from the South Pole. The experiment relies on large arrays of bolometric detectors cooled to a low temperature of 100 mK. The Research Assistant will assist in the micro-assembly of focal plane detector array wafers with superconducting SQUID readout chips and high-density wiring boards. The assembly requires making reliable electrical connections with wire bonds, followed by electrical continuity checks and debugging. The mechanical and electrical properties of the assembly will be documented to facilitate diagnosis during testing and operation. The Research Assistant will work with graduate students, postdocs, and staff engaged in research in this program within a vibrant research environment.

Essential Job Duties
  • micro-mechanical assembly of the focal plane components
  • making electrical connections with wire bonds, electrically screening the arrays, measuring critical dimensions, and documenting the results in internal web postings.
  • Screening component parts, which may involve cryogenic measurements of the superconducting SQUID readout chips.
  • The Research Assistant may develop new assemblies for the TIME project.
  • Other duties as assigned
