Position description

POSITION DESCRIPTION - Assistant Project Scientist - South Pole Telescope

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

I. RESEARCH (95%)

Research Activity (85%)

This position involves work on the reduction of data from the South Pole Telescope, and auxiliary data sets, to place constraints on cosmological parameters and astrophysical models. This work will be done both directly and via the supervision of graduate students. Depending on interests and experience of the qualified applicant, the data reduction will include the reduction of multi-frequency maps from the SPT3G surveys to estimates of cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectra and CMB lensing spectra, and/or using these multi-frequency maps to infer secondary CMB anisotropies for both probing the epoch of reionization and, via cross-correlation with other probes of large-scale structure, the growth of structure. This research will require collaborations with Professor Lloyd Knox in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UC Davis, internal collaborators and students in the Knox Group, and external collaborators.

The candidate will supervise students on the reduction of multi-frequency maps from the SPT3G surveys to estimates of cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectra and CMB lensing spectra.

Publication (5%)

The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets including git repositories and databases, either independently or in collaboration with the PI and/or other members of the research team.

Grant Acquisition (5%)

The candidate will assist in acquiring proposals for funding from federal agencies and other funding organizations. They will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. He will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)

As appropriate, the candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to the field of theoretical cosmology and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications. They will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The qualified candidate will have a PhD in Physics or a related field and at least five years experience in the analysis of cosmic microwave background data.
