About the Job

Position Overview- Assistant Softball Coach

The University of Minnesota Athletic Department is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Coach - Softball. The individual in this role will primarily serve as the Defensive Coach and provide additional support with Hitting instruction. This position will assist the Head Coach in all facets of the program, including organization, administration, and promotion of a competitive NCAA Division I softball program in the Big Ten Conference.

Primary Responsibilities

Coaching - 60%

  • Assist the Head Coach in developing and maintaining a high-level intercollegiate softball program.
  • Instruct and develop student-athletes in the technical and tactical aspects of the game, with a primary focus on defense and hitting.
  • Participate in practice planning, skill development sessions, and opponent scouting.
  • Support game preparation, strategy implementation, and in-game coaching.
  • Assist in managing administrative duties, including team travel logistics, event planning, and operational needs.
  • Help monitor academic progress and overall welfare of student-athletes.

Recruiting - 25%

  • Evaluate and recruit prospective student-athletes who are athletically competitive in the Big Ten and academically prepared to succeed at the University of Minnesota.
  • Assist with on-campus visits and off-campus recruiting efforts in coordination with NCAA and University guidelines.

Athletic Relationships - 10%

  • Represent the program positively with alumni, university stakeholders, fans, and the media.
  • Foster strong relationships across the athletic department and University community.
  • Support and contribute to departmental initiatives related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ensure full compliance with NCAA, Big Ten, and University rules and policies.

Other - 5%

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Softball Coach
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree-
  • Solid work ethic along with strong motivational, coaching, teaching and communication skills.
  • The ability to travel extensively during the recruiting process.
  • Prior softball coaching experience or playing experience, preferably at the intercollegiate Division 1 level.
  • Extensive knowledge of the sport of softball.
  • Knowledge and experience working with NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience with data analysis in softball - (synergy, Trackman, Rapsodo, Flight scope)
  • Candidates are expected to be committed to multiculturalism and working with a diverse student body.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000 - $95,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
