Job Description:

PURPOSE:

Set up and operate conventional, CNC, and special purpose machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the following duties. Train staff when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist in training co-workers on proper operation, setup, and basic programming of machining equipment.
  • Serve as a technical mentor for Machinist 1 employees, offering guidance, hands-on instruction, and support in developing their machining skills.
  • Recommend new tooling, fixtures, methods, and process improvements to enhance part quality, reduce cycle times, and increase overall efficiency.
  • Operates forklifts, overhead cranes, and hoists.
  • Set up and use machine equipment including CNC, milling, boring, drilling, tapping, threading, and lathes.
  • Perform periodic maintenance on all equipment in machine shops.
  • Utilize JD Edwards, work order routings/parts lists, and work order paperwork to complete jobs accurately
  • Read, interpret, and utilize blueprints.
  • Deburr parts and ensure quality checks have been done prior to sending parts to the next operation.
  • Verifies work using machinist measurement tools like calipers, micrometers, etc.
  • Maintain tight tolerances as required by engineering and customer specifications.
  • Design and use jigs and fixtures to maintain consistent quality.
  • Programs, calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Assist less experienced machinists with program setup, tool selection, and troubleshooting issues related to part production or machine operation.
  • Collaborate with production personnel, buyer planners, production team leads, or supervisor to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Help identify training needs and provide feedback on performance development for junior team members.
  • Assist in the development and refinement operating procedures and training materials.
  • Responsible for ensuring cutting tools and drill bits are in good condition and must change out if required.
  • Program CNC equipment utilizing G&M codes and conversational programming languages.
  • Float to different areas within the machine shop, directed by supervisor, to ensure that all machining centers are on schedule.
  • Responsible for executing and supporting the quality system and procedures in the effort for continuous improvement.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Recommend tooling, new fixtures, and process to improve efficiencies and quality of machining process.
  • Machine products to engineering specifications and each Customer's standards of quality.
  • Train co-workers to use/program machining equipment, and improve their skill set with measurable goals.
  • Make suggestions for improvements to products and processes.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or 2-5+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
