Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Milieu Manager will function as a staff-development trainer, sharing expert techniques and strategies with core and prn staff working with patients of all ages. This will include demonstrating effective crisis-management skills, taking proactive steps to prevent crises on the units when warning signs become evident, and provide a coach-to-team approach of problem-solving on the units. Additionally, the Milieu Manager will be responsible for oversight of other LPNs and the Mental Health Technicians, while recognizing all nursing team members who need additional training with therapeutic techniques/skills and provide intentional redirection and oversight to help improve such skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate from an accredited program of licensed practical nursing required.
  • Current Washington State LPN licensure
  • 3-5 years of experience in hospital or healthcare setting
  • Possess knowledge of psychiatric group processes, therapeutic relationships processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting and behavior management, crisis management with aggressive behaviors
  • BLS, First Aide, Verbal De-escalation, and Handle with Care trainer certifications (provided by INBH)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, or related
  • Previous supervisory experience

EMPLOYEE RATES AND BENEFIT

  • In addition to base hourly rate, employees receive shift differentials ranging from $1.50 to $6.50 per hour
  • One hundred sixty-eight hours paid time off per year to include 6 major holidays.

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

All functions are essential functions unless otherwise noted.

The job functions of this position are not limited to the duties listed below.

  1. Facilitates the completion of safety round checklists by verifying that precaution checks are completed timely and accurately, all patient doors are open, assignments sheets are completed, and patient information has not been left on the unit.
  2. Ensures weekly unit specific recurrent training on Handle with Care techniques that includes team member demonstration and documentation of completion.
  3. Works closely with the Clinical Educator on staff education and training.
  4. Maintains all applicable trainer certifications and participates in New Employee Orientation.
  5. Actively functions as preceptor for LPNs and MHTs.
  6. Serves as a role model for team members through maintaining a professional approach and providing a positive work environment and team spirit. Leads by example with initiative and creativity.
  7. Ensure staff establishes therapeutic relationships with patients and provides assigned patient care within the general policies, philosophy, and objectives of the Department of Nursing and the facility.
  8. Ensure staff completes patient rounds timely in accordance with unit requirements and accurately documents patient observations on the Patient Observation Record.
  9. Ensure staff demonstrates knowledge and skills related to special treatment procedures for precautions, seclusions, restraints, elopements, close observation and searches.
  10. Ensure staff responds promptly and correctly to codes called; maintains skill in managing aggressive and combative patients; can verbalize and demonstrate proper protocols for code responses, restraints, and special precautions.
  11. Ensure staff demonstrates ability to therapeutically interact with, especially difficult, threatening, or resistant patients; able to de-escalate potentially combative or hostile situations.
  12. Ensure staff demonstrates effective time management skills; organizes work so that critical assignments may be completed promptly, accurately, and thoroughly.
