The Assistant Director for Student Diversity and Inclusion provides programming, education, outreach and administrative support for student diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at Davidson College. Supervised by the Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion, this position will serve as a critical leader in developing strong interpersonal relationships with historically and systemically marginalized student communities the Center directly supports: students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, undocumented students and first generation students. In addition, the Center staff will work to support and collaborate with varying departments to support students with disabilities, international students, and students with varying spiritual identities. The Assistant Director will offer direct student support by working with the office team on overall administrative operations for the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, coordinate the STRIDE (Students Together Reaching Individual Development and Education) Peer Leader Pre-Orientation Program, provide leadership and programming for the Center's students of color, LGBTQIA+, and first generation student populations, serve as the direct supervisor to the Center's student staff and foster a welcoming environment in each of the Center's multiple community spaces. Through strategic and innovative outreach efforts, this position is tasked with raising the visibility of diversity, equity, and inclusion community spaces and programs while supporting students and connecting students to campus resources. Duties & Responsibilities: Programming and Event Management
- Develop a strategic and innovative programmatic plan for the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion based on observable student needs, departmental priorities and grounded in college student development and intersectionality frameworks.
- Leadership on the Center's signature events with specific focus on students of color, LGBTQIA+ and first-generation student visibility and community building. This includes events such as new student Welcome Week, alumni/family engagement weekend, Trans and Queer Pride events, First Generation Visibility Day, Identity-month programming and collaborations, recognition ceremonies and service-learning projects.
- Event management for the STRIDE Program (Students Together Reaching Individual Development and Education is a peer leader program that supports the campus transition of all incoming first year and transfer students while centering and highlighting the unique lived experiences of students of color). This includes the implementation of Peer Mentor training in preparation for the STRIDE Pre-Orientation Program for incoming students and families, semester programming and check-ins with peer mentees and peer mentors, and the End-of-the-Year Celebration.
- Collaborate on events and programming with varying Student Life partners such as Academic Access and Disability Resources, International Student Engagement, Chaplains Office, Student Activities, Student Health and Well-Being, Residence Life etc. and partners across Davidson College.
- In collaboration with the Center staff design and facilitate programming, and/or workshops, trainings on a variety of social justice topics for student leaders.
Student Supervision, Advising and Support
- Serve as the supervisor for approximately 3-5 student staff members. This includes: creating staff schedules, advising program development, facilitating professional development, performance evaluation, management of bi-weekly timecard approvals, leading staff meetings and team building activities.
- Advise a group of 20-25 STRIDE Program Peer Mentors that will support incoming students/mentees participating in the program. This includes recruitment and training for Peer Mentors, holding check-in meetings, ongoing leadership development, event planning and offering performance feedback. Advising also includes regular check-ins and relationship building with 25-50 first-year/transfer student participants/mentees as they navigate their transition to Davidson.
- Develop strong interpersonal relationships with historically and systemically marginalized student communities such as students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, undocumented students and first generation students while connecting them to campus resources as needed. Student development framework should also honor collective and intersectional identities within and across student groups while also holding attention to coalition building. This may include being available to students by offering drop-in hours, appointments, hosting group discussions, assisting students with brainstorming programming ideas etc.
- Serve as a resource and provide resources to student organizations across diverse identities and groups such as students of color, international students, first generation students, undocumented students, LGBTQIA+ students, students with disabilities, students with varying spiritual identities etc. on events and projects.
Center Administration and Operations
- Create a welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors at the Center and its additional campus community spaces by advising them of campus resources.
- Support the Center staff with financial transactions and budget management: purchasing, vendor contract processing, travel arrangements, monthly credit card statement reconciliations, reports, etc.
- Serve as the secondary administrative manager for room reservation requests for the Center's multiple spaces.
- Assist the Administrative Assistant with coordinating meetings and scheduling student appointments.
- Assist the Administrative Assistant with monitoring and maintaining inventory of office supplies and kitchen facilities.
Outreach, Communication and Resources
- Develop and implement a marketing and communication plan that raises the visibility of diversity, equity, and inclusion spaces, programs and resources.
- Design print and social media materials to publicize events and resources with attention to consistent messaging for the Center's mission through programs, campaigns, resources guides, event fliers, office banners etc.
- Manage social media and technology platforms for the Center by providing frequent updates on events and resources.
- Track campus community engagement with the Center's multiple spaces.
- Coordinate and assist with updates to the Center's website and create forms, evaluations etc. for varying events and projects.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Master's degree in higher education, student affairs or related field is required.
- A minimum of 1-2 years of related experience working with college students within higher education and/or an educational setting.
- Experience attending and/or facilitating courses and/or workshops/trainings related to college student development, curriculum design, diversity/social justice, gender/sexuality studies, disability studies, racial/ethnic studies, international relations and/or religious studies.
- Experience working with college students from historically underrepresented populations such as (students of color, first-generation students, international students, LGBTQIA+ students, undocumented students, students with disabilities, students with varying spiritual identities, etc.) in a student staff supervision, organization advising, mentorship and/or leadership development capacity.
- Experience in event planning, workshop/training/design and facilitation and office administration.
- Experience using, developing and managing social media, websites, various software, and event/program planning platforms.
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills working with a variety of social identity groups and across varying communities and populations.
