About the Job

Research (80% time)
Propagate and titrate various viruses (including human coronaviruses 229E and OC-43) in cell cultures and embryonated chicken eggs.
Conduct experiments to determine the efficacy of various disinfectants against animal and human viruses.
Conduct experimental studies in chickens, turkeys, and pigs.
Perform RNA extraction and RT-PCR.
Prepare samples for next generation sequencing (NGS) and analysis of NGS data.
Assist in projects involving bacteria and bacteriophages.
Work after hours and on weekends as needed.
Use personal protective equipment as per lab requirements.

Lab and Data Management (20% time)
Collect and organize data for all research activities.
Collaborate with the PI and his scientist in the generation and testing of research hypotheses and data analysis, writing of papers, grants, and reports, preparation of presentations, and publishing manuscripts in scientific journals
Attend, participate, or present at laboratory meetings, seminars and conferences.
Perform miscellaneous laboratory duties as assigned by the PIs including, but not limited to, ordering supplies and reagents and help the PIS in the organization and coordination of research projects.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Candidates with a DVM degree or equivalent foreign degree are eligible to apply.

Preferred Qualifications:
A PhD degree. Candidates should have experience in handling of animals, sampling of live and dead animals, sample processing for cell culture and molecular analysis such as PCR, qPCR and Next Generation Sequencing. Strong organizational, quantitative analysis and writing skills are necessary. Candidates with a strong background in molecular virology, next-generation sequencing, Bayesian analysis, phylogenetic analysis, statistical genetics, and the ability to use R and/or UNIX/command line applications will be given preference.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $58,656.00 - $61,008.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience
