Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fire Protection Engineer to work in our Occupational Safety & Health Department. Our team works either a 4x10 located out of CFA site facilities with every Friday off. You will provide fire protection engineering support related to facility systems management, engineering evaluations, research, project engineering and project development. Identify and analyze fire hazards in work control through fire hazard analyses. Oversee proper installation, maintenance, and upgrade of fire detection, suppression, and communication systems. Identify and propose resolutions to fire and life safety code deficiencies. You will report to the manager of our Occupational Safety and Health Department. Responsibilities Include:
- Provide detailed fire protection engineering design plans and specifications for in-house or off-site design efforts.
- Provide technical reviews of contractor drawings and equipment submittals of fire protection systems.
- Participate in the identification, analysis, and mitigation of Fire Protection related hazards associated with work organization operations, research, and maintenance.
- Perform Fire Hazard Analysis and Facility Assessments for operations, facilities, and structures. This includes performing fire dynamics calculations and use of professional judgement to determine fire/smoke spread and control; analyze fire protection systems to determine adequacy of fire control; analyze Life Safety Code to ensure adequacy of evacuation of a facility in the event of a fire; ensure DOE orders and standards are being followed in nuclear and non-nuclear facilities and structures; ensure National Fire Protection Association, International Building Codes, International Fire Codes, Idaho Codes, and City codes, as applicable, are met; work with state, city, and DOE officials.
- Develop approaches to deficiencies with practical solutions.
- Conduct fire protection engineering surveys and prepare corrective actions or suggested improvement reports for fire protection deficiencies, including cost estimates.
- Review work control documents to ensure appropriate incorporation of experienced Fire Protection theories and principles required for hazard mitigation controls.
- Review work organization's broad base of design activities for new or modified systems, structures, and components to ensure fire protection related criteria is identified and included in design criteria documents, incorporated in designs, and substantially verified.
- Review work control documentation and walk downs to ensure safe completion of inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment.
- Help develop various budgets as they pertain to fire protection equipment and projects.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Level 1: Bachelor of Science in an accredited Engineering or BS in Fire Protection Engineering Technology curriculum that meets the requirements to sit for the professional engineering exam or be a registered professional engineer in fire protection.
- Level 2: Bachelor of Science in an accredited Engineering or BS in Fire Protection Engineering Technology curriculum that meets the requirements to sit for the professional engineering exam or be a registered professional engineer in fire protection plus two years of relevant experience.
- Must have an extensive working knowledge of Federal and State Orders & Regulations, National Codes and Standards, quality assurance, and safety.
- Experience in the design and construction of fire detection and protection systems.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Job Information:
- The pay range for this position is: Level 1 ($65,064 - $133,416) / Level 2 ($77,628 - $159,228). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
- TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
- Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in office, industrial, construction, and laboratory environments. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
